    Hello,

I tend to usually find the answer to a lot of my questions by searching either here or google but I can’t seem to find a definitive answer to my question:

Can a short shifter for a 2WD 6SPD model be used on a 4X4 6SPD model? And vice versa.

While doing some research I’ve found a old for sale thread for a TRD short shifter where the seller was unknowingly running a 2WD TRD short shifter in his 4x4 but didn’t realize it until he bought one for a 4x4 and noticed there was a difference in the angle of the shifter stalk. He claims they can be ran interchangeably.

I then came across another thread where someone contacted TRD directly to ask them what’s the difference between the two different part numbers for the TRD SS and they were told that they cannot be ran interchangeably.

Companies like Core Shifters state on their website that the SS for the RA60 will not fit on the RA60F. And vice versa.

I know the transmissions, shift boot, bezel, surrounding parts, etc. are exactly the same between the two models so I don’t see why they wouldn’t be interchangeable but also why make the shift stalk a different angle from the 2WD version if there isn’t anything that it needs to clear?

    Thank you

Can’t see why they wouldn’t be. Only difference is the tail shaft portion as far as I know.

thanks for your input, 6 gear. That’s exactly what I was thinking but all of these different claims and part numbers were throwing me off so I wanted to verify.

Is this the for sale thread you are referencing? If it is, the guys sig block indicates that he has a Prerunner, not a 4x4. I purchased his SS and installed it in my Prerunner. Seems fine to me.

As far as asking TRD, I suspect they'll always say that different part #s can't be interchanged, just because they wouldn't want any liability for going against their own application guide.

Yes they are interchangeable, I know cause I did it. You can install a 2wd short shifter on a 4wd, and vice versa even the spacer is the same. The only difference is the angle of the shifter, 4x4 has a steeper angle than the 2wd.
