I did some quick research and mostly found catalytic thefts on the 4 cyl. tacomas.
has anyone had their catalytic converter stolen that has a 4x4 and v6 combo?
there has been an increase of theft in my area and my neighbor just had his
cats stolen from his tundra. i have reduced my insurance deductable after i found
out how much it cost to replace. i will probably paint the cats too.
    any info will be helpful.

I don't think painting them will help much. These folks tend to take them to recyclers that already know what the deal is, as far as I know. You'll still wake up to a catless truck. I think your energy and money is best spent on making them physically harder to steal than normal, like with a cat shield.

I just installed a Stainless Steel MillerCat. My thought is any shield should make the bad people move to an easier target.

    https://catshield.com/collections/toyota-tacoma-3-5l-4x4-2016-2021/products/stainless-steel-millercat-2016-2021-toyota-tacoma-3-5l-4x4-cat-shield™

Stencil or painting your VIN on the Cat can help law enforement contact you if the Cat is recovered. My thinking is a shield makes it harder to get to the Cats is the best protection.

    Oh look, another mod....
Cats gets stolen from trucks that are convenient for thieves. Motor size or 4whl drive status has nothing to do with how they pick the vehicle. Oh yeah, painting them is a great idea. This will help the thief identify exactly what to steal from you.

I’m still not understanding the paint thing… like paint your vin number on it? Won’t that paint burn off with a torch?

Stainless steel MillerCat shields here too. My Taco is parked in a school parking lot every day now - don't want to end up like @CBAD18Taco 's son's friend. :pout:

I have the aluminum Miller Cat shield. Just a deterrent to push thieves to someone else’s vehicle and not mine.

The Dirtbag Heroin addicts and meth junkies are stealing them everywhere. Even thug groups are getting in on it because it is so lucrative.

Most places take them in through the back door and pay cash. Very hard to catch these people/groups as they can strike anywhere.

We have so many incidents in my town and the solvability rates on the cases are almost Zero percent.

I've thought about this before and you would have to rig it up so the current only runs through some metal that is not putting current in the rest of the truck.

in criminal friendly states you'd find yourself in jail while the cat thief gets a citation if they injure themselves stealing it.

Well, the current would only go through wherever the idiots touch the truck. It could hurt the door handle touch circuit if they touched that, may not be a good idea.

There was a post here showing razor wire welded to the cats, but a few rods of rebar welded to it may be good too…

On 3rd gens, are they mainly just getting the secondary cats?

I have three steel Mobtown skids under my truck and thought about just welding on some side plates to the middle one to make it hard to get a sawzall in there.

That's why I got a cat shield on my truck. I know nothing can stop a thief, but this will dramatically slow them down or seriously deter them. I also park my truck in my garage every single night. I'm so security conscious that I even set the alarm on the truck and lock the door going into the garage.
