97 4x4 auto 252kmiles maintenance is up to date on everything. Trucks runs oem trans fluid, I change it every 30k. Truck shifts hard wvery morning or if it gets cold. If I go from P to D it while shift so hard like a a hard thunk. After the trans temp warms up to 150degrees then im golden shifta fine. I have since changed to synthetic valvoline and have added lucas and still no good, next ima add a magnefine filter for the trans.

Your truck must identify as a 2nd Gen
Because hard shifts when cold is normal for a 2nd Gen.

But in all seriousness, is your Engine Coolant Temperature working correctly?
The ECM modifies shift points and firmness until the truck reaches temperature.

So when's the last time u greased your universals and checked your carrier...
should be done at least once a year....

And same time check tranny mount for movement.....need a friend to help....
you eye everything while he goes thru shifts.....

If you have that kick down cable from carb to tranny.....that cable is real sensitive...

Unforturenately these aisin trannys are not cold natured.....they need to warm up a little.....even the newer gen2's are this way......
maybe its a good thing......maybe why they last so long.....they're plain and simple as u can get......

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Sounds like your truck has symptoms of having an automatic transmission. Swap to manual to relieve symptoms
