Basically I would like to hide key in truck and keep key for door on person or stash outside van while surfing.

Find your own unique place to hide a key if that's what you're looking to do. If you put it the same place everyone else is.. then its easier to find it and steal the truck.

I take the key off the fob and leave the fob at home. Then I take the key with me, secured by a lanyard or something to my bathing suit, paddle board, life jacket or whatever gear I'm plying with that day.

Usually works but when it comes out sideways it can be rough.

But still same problem, needs to be waterproofed inside.

Hide it in your prison wallet. Sorry I’m not much help :p. Honesty I would hide it under my UCA.

The only time I'd bring two keys is if I'm traveling. My key doesn't fit in a traditional hide-a-key, so that's out. We do have two (or one) little cubbies in the bed that can be modded to hang a key from or something while at the beach. There's also lots of frame rail where you could put a custom magnetic box....or one of these. https://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Box-...&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584345029671995&th=1

get a lockbox often used by contractors or realtors. you can buy them at home depot for about $40 and attach it to a steering component or if you have a hitch, the small oval openings on each side of the hitch.

    Need more than 2 keys?
As far as the beach, same as kids, keep them from drowning.

You may be overthinking the 'key' thing.......just a little.

I use a local locksmith for spare keys. My Tacoma came with 2. I had 2 more made for it. One is kept hidden on the outside, not saying where. It will unlock doors but won't start the engine. That key cost me about $3. I had another chipped key made that I keep hidden inside the truck. If I get locked out, I can get in. If someone finds the hidden key on the outside, they can't start the engine with that key. Hopefully they won't think about or spend the time looking for another key inside. Cost on the chipped key and getting it programed was about $60.

Of the 2 factory keys I keep one, the other is kept at home.

I don't surf or do much of anything around salt water. But when I do I find a way to keep at least one key on my person. There are ways to make that happen. Many shorts, shirts, etc. have a zippered pocket that will keep a key secure. And if I do lose it, I do have a backup. The problem with hiding a key after you arrive is that someone will see where you hide it and take advantage of it.

Another tip I learned the hard way. DO NOT lock your doors as you walk away using the key fob. Only use it to unlock as you return to the truck. Manually press the lock button before you close the door. Thieves are using radio receivers to steal the signals, clone another remote and get into your vehicle. They can't start the truck but can steal contents. That happened to me a few years ago with my F150.

It was caught on video. You can see the guy approach my truck with a remote in his hand. The parking lights flash when he unlocks the truck and he even re-locks it as he leaves. You can see the lights flash to indicate it is locked. There was a good description of the guy, but no tag number of the vehicle he was driving.

+1 on getting a spare key made without a chip - I have just a surf key on a string for my wetsuit pocket or trunks. Then just lock my electronic key in the truck. For the fancy cars with keyless ignitions you need to turn you key fob off. see the owners manual on how to do that. It seems at San Onofre all the thefts are dudes sitting and watching where keys get stashed, then just driving the car away.

These are like a flag for thieves begging them to steal your truck. Hawaii has a rash of thefts and they can pop these open is 3 seconds.
