Water Pump Maintenance Interval?

Your thinking about it wrong.

They suggest doing the water pump with a timing belt because its no extra labor to do the pump while you do the timing belt. It saves hours of labor down the road if the water pump pump goes bad as the timing belt has to be removed to do it.

On newer vehicles they are driving by the serpentine belt so the labor is much less.

 

That interval was to change the timing belt. You replaced the water pump because you have it off anyway. Since we should never have our to touch the timing chains we don't need to remove the water pump. So basically its a forget about it item unless you have an issue with it.

 

I'm being honest. My first new truck was an 84 4Runner. I've owned many many vehicles since then and never once (and back then I pulled all maintenance myself) did I see a water pump or tensioner maintenance spec.

 

If I were an automobile manufacturer I would not likely bother to do the testing required to make a legitimate recommendation of the service life for a part beyond the warranty period.

 

I never changed the coolant in my tundra. If the dealer added some, or changed it when i did the timing belt replacements every 100k along with the new water pump as a kit, they didn't say.

 

You would need to add some amount of coolant with a water pump change, a lot leaks out when you pull the pump. Probably enough was added to keep the coolant in ok shape.

 

I am a bit OCD on fluid replacement right down to power steering and the clutch system but tend to follow the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy. It's taken me many years to adopt that approach but it's solid advice.

 

Water pumps, alternators, etc have always been a “change when they fail” kind of thing, or change when they start making too much noise.

 

Actually, you are over thinking it. No offense intended, but as others said, it's because you have to remove the water pump when you change the timing belt, not because it has a life span. The pump wobbles or leaks, you replace.

 

Maintenance schedule for a water pump? Dafuq you talkin bout Willis? You replace it if/when it goes bad.

 

Toyota adapts to the changes/designs being done, look at oil changes now, a lot of their vechices are recommended 10k oil change no more 5k. If it's not broken or leaking its fine.

 

Again, not overthinking anything, just asking a question. I’ve owned at least 2 other Toyota trucks that did have a replacement interval on the water pump specifically, so I was simply wondering why this truck didn’t seem to as well. I understand (now) that it’s because the timing belt needed to be replaced on those models, so it was recommended to do the water pump at the same time because it’s relatively cheap, and you’re already in there. I get that… but I had to ask to find out that information. My old truck said change it out at this mileage, and my new one doesn’t… just wanted to know why. Isn’t that what these forums are for? That isn’t overthinking, it’s called just doing my due diligence to make sure this truck lasts as long as my 25 year old 4runner has.

 

Why so defensive brother? Your question has been answered multiple times and no one is busting your balls here. Sometimes a simple "thanks for the Intel guys" reply is all that is needed.

 

We are talking about a Tacoma, TW is Tacoma not 4 Runner World. Not all vehicles even from the same manufacture have the same maintenance schedule.

Because he kept telling me I’m overthinking it after the fact. I got an answer to my question, cool, I accept it. Then for the next 2 days, people keep re-answering the same question and then acting as if I’m not accepting the original answer, and telling me I’m overthinking it. I’m not arguing with the advice given. I’m not thinking about my question at all anymore.

2 things… 1) a 3rd gen 4runner came with the same engine options as the 1st gen Tacoma, so they have the same maintenance recommendations in regards to this. 2) I also mentioned in that same quote that my old ‘98 TACOMA has the same recommendation, so… Tacoma.

See above. Cool, I got the answer 2 days ago. It seems just about every thread on this site gets and answer in the first couple of posts, and then it’s just page after page of the same answer over and over again, but with cool guy flexing and other bullshit.
