So is this tires or bearings?

My pirelli scorpion tires are noisy as hell, I took a video but something is really really wrong here either the tires are out of round or I have a bad bearing:

Tire shop is trying to tell me it's "normal", 85 decibels inside the truck at highway speed lol. Absolutely deafening.

A tire rotation may help with diagnostic.

A step further would be to only rotate 1 side at a time. Swap just the driver side front and rear tires, then retest and notate any changes. If nothing changes, do the same on just the passenger side front to passenger rear. If after rotating both sides if nothing changes it would likely point to something other than tires or wheels.

Do you feel any vibrations? If so are they in your seat, or the steering wheel?

If the tone changes with left or right turns it could be bearings. But to me it sounds like tires. How many miles and how often you rotate?

It sounds normal to me if you dont rotate ahead of schedule and have 50,000 miles on the tires.

Regular rotations by Discount Tire every 5-6k miles. Tread depth is 10/32.

I feel it in the steering wheel slightly.

Don't have any place to jack it up and screw with it but do have an appointment at a local shop to put it on a lift and check alignment, bearings all that on Thursday.

Let us know how it turns out. My first instinct is tires but I been wrong before. If its tires I will steer clear of the Pirelli tires and stick with my Toyos with my next set (which isnt far off)

To me that sounds like irregular wear tire noise. Can you see any heel toe wear to the tread elements? Tread designs that have long circumferential elements are more likely to develope irregular wear. (heel toe)upload_2022-9-1_10-40-57.jpg

Yeah they do have that sawtooth pattern I'm trying to figure out why. I'm worried there is something wrong in the drivetrain/suspension/alignment to cause that wear as I rotate religiously.

Basically run my hand over the tread it's smooth in one direction and rough in the other.

You suspension and alignment will not cause heel toe wear. Alignment will cause a tire to be worn more on the inside or outside of the tire. Rotating your tires doesnt completely elminate this wear but does reduce it. Tread pattern and tire compound effect how bad this becomes and some tires are better than others. Looking at the pattern I can see why it might be bad for this type of wear.

Do you yourself rotate them? What rotation pattern do you use?

If not do you know what rotation pattern that is used where you get them rotated?

If tires are only rotated front to back instead of cross rotating them they will always spin in the same direction and will just continue to get worse.

I take it to discount tire every 5000-6000 and tell em rotate my tires so however they do it. I think front to back with a cross?

I have those exact same tires on my Tacoma and they are not loud at all. They get a little louder on concrete roads, but on asphalt they are actually really quiet. Not much louder at all than the stock Firestones that came on it from the factory. I don't even notice the noise to be honest. DEFINITELY not 85 decibels.

I had a local shop check everything and they think it's the tires. Swapped sides still loud but not as loud according to my phone app (80 decibels lol). Discount says they will do a customer satisfaction thing on a new set of tires so we'll see how that goes.

I always ran them at 30psi cold but tried everything from 25 to 40, more pressure seems like more noise but I dunno.

    They are 265/75r16

I have the same exact issue on my Ridge Grapplers. They tend to wear uneven closer to the edges. I need to figure out why it’s happening because I just got new tires and don’t want them to wear the same if something on the truck is causing it. My suspension is only about 15-20k miles old. So alignment won’t cause this?

They thought pressure and rotation schedule. I had another shop swap them side to side and they aren't as loud now. Discount Tire offered me a customer satisfaction thing that is basically 3 tires, get a 4th free but it is scaled on how much the tires are and no other discounts or deals apply. So on one hand I do appreciate it but on the other hand it's no different than if I went there and made them price match Walmart on a sale item. Probably going to get a set of the cheap trailfinders I had them on another truck and they were fine.

    Are your ridge grapplers oversized?

They are 285/75/16. I have balanced and rotated them frequently because of the issue but I still don’t know what caused it.

I think it has to do with tread design, rubber compound and the weight of the vehicle vs the tire load/air pressure. Lots of people on here with lifts are probably running around not giving a fuck about their noisy ass tires too.

I had a set of them on my F150. They made some noise, but the cab on the Ford is MUCH quieter than my Tacoma regardless of the tires. Most AT or mud tires get louder as they wear down. If you're over 40,000 miles that sounds normal for that type of tire. I just turn the radio up louder.

I think some noise with that tread pattern would be normal. Hard to tell from the recording.
