Howdy to all and to all a good ride

My Tacoma is 2001 SR5, and was a gift from my son a couple years back. He bought it new and installed a legal cold air intake and otherwise is pretty stock.
I'm trying diagnose a lean running engine but my new OBDII tester indicates communication failure. I'm going to search your resources and learns a bit.

What model OBDII tester is it specifically? I had a similar issue with a tester I was gifted not communicating with the truck and found another person experiencing the same issue, with the same tester, in a group on Facebook.
