Looking to buy a 2nd gen Tacoma (2010) and found one I like. The truck is very well taken care of but the dealer sent me these photos of the underbody. I know there's been recalls for the rusty frame on these trucks is this the kind of rust I should worry about or just normal rust for the midwest. Thanks.IMG_1133.jpg 683048637.jpg

Looks a little sketchy to me when rot is visible on a seam.

    Just getting started.
I'd pass. I can't imagine what the inside of that frame looks like given the visible rot on the outside.

The small hole and what appears to be covered up rust at the seams is a big red flag to me.
The rest of the truck could be perfect. But, if the frame isn't, it's not worth the big problems.

    All stock, baby!
It looks like someone painted over the rust; you can clearly see the overspray on the body underside. Perhaps they just did a lousy job of rust remediation, or it could have been an attempt to hide the severity of the problem. In any case the frame is perforated in that first pic, large enough that if the truck had met the other criteria (sold in a state where the TSB applies, within the specified timeframe) it would have been replaced. So unless someone goes in with a hammer and chisel and proves there are no structural problems, I'd stay away.

Oh there will be some mods all right
RUN! That is the old standby of black spray paint to make a rusty frame look good.

Stay away. I've been down that road before. I can bet it's a lot worse than what they are showing you.

Bottom picture. Top left quadrant. Is there like a huge chunk rusted away and missing here, or am I looking at it wrong?

Also....to the OP....What are the specs on the truck and what are they asking?

    Just curious.

Run Away!!!!! In my opinion you do not want to get into a vehicle with any kind of frame damage or rust showing. The world is awash in Tacomas, it's worth it to find a different one which doesn't have that kind of issue. Keep calling around, check Craigslist or TW often and in no time you'll find something better.

When I bought mine, I drove south of the Mason Dixon line and found a pristine 2012 near Chattanooga.

OP I think enough people have chimed in on which direction to go, but I'll just add if it were me I'd call the dealer out on it. Does it matter or do they care?...probably not, but I'd still throw the shit back in their face out of principle. Just so sick of seeing dealers, companies, etc. pumping out garbage products to the public and swindling them out of their money.

"But, but, but the dealer said they gave it their 750 point inspection..."

I really appreciate the help guys. This'll be the first vehicle I'm buying myself so I'm pretty new. I'll make sure to keep looking around. Thanks again.

Even if you did buy that truck you would have missed the frame recall. Good luck with your search

I dodged a bullet back in 2020 when I started looking for a 2nd gen Tacoma, it was almost as if I was looking at your truck, except the one I encountered was white. The WHOLE situation was sketchy as hell!

Frame was spray painted black, you can see tale tale signs of the egregious job they did with trying to cover up the rust. It took me 2 minutes of knocking around with a small hammer to nope the hell out of there.

I expect the decision has been made, but for the sake of documentation:
Hard pass, hell no, even the cab mount is starting to rot away.
    Do not buy this truck.
