Hey guys, I have been searching the forum high and low for a few days now and can’t quite get the answer I’m looking for to this question, I’ve found a few helpful threads but am still uncertain:

I just bought an 03’ Tacoma (pics below) it has a AAL in the back and is leveled in the front. It is in need of tires. I wanted to upgrade the wheels since they are corroded so I found a set of 17’ FJ Cruiser Trail wheels locally (pic below). I measured the backspacing on these wheels to be roughly 4 7/8”.

The truck has a bit of wheel well gap with the stock 265/70/16 so I wanted to go up a size with the new tires. I was thinking of going with a 275/70/17. I know this will be a slightly taller and wider tire and I think it will fill in the gap and look good.

My question is, am I going to rub with the tire being wider and the backspacing of the new wheel? Will these wheels stick in or out a bit compared to stock ( couldn’t find a solid answer on the stock backspacing for the stock 16” wheels). I don’t think I will rub on the UCA as it looks to sit above the tire now, maybe due to the leveling coils in the front?

I would like to order tires tomorrow so I can get them installed this week, and have been beating myself up over which size. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if anyone has FJ wheels with a 265 or 275 on a first gen, please post a pic so I can get an idea of the sizing. Thanks!

    I have a 2000 with king's front with AAL rear and 5100
    A 1.5 lift all around
    It's on stock fj 17x7.5 +4 steelies wrapped with 265/70 ko2
It rubs the frame a tiny bit in full lock left on the driverside

Just check the inside of the wheels and it should have a offset stamp somewhere on a spoke

I know 1st Gen stock offset is +15 and it needs a minimal 4.5 or less back space to clear the uca if your wheels protrudes to much out of the fender well will start to rub the fender, fender flares, and pinch welds

My research tells me there both 15mm offset.
But the DJ wheels are .5 wider as is the tire.
    So it's anyone's guess really.
The tire is also about 1.5 taller so .75 on each side of center.
Do you have room to go up and in .75?

yeah, I dont think I will have any issue with the taller tire. There seems to be plenty of wheel well gap. I'm just thinking that a 265/70r17 wont look much different than the stock size that is on there now, I know technically it is a 1" taller tire but will 1" even be that noticeable? What do you guys think?

And the other issue is that there are very few tires made in the 275/70r17 size ( 1.6" Taller, .4" Wider than stock). The BFG AT's are only available in an E-Rated tire which means they will be heavy. I dont want the truck to become sluggish. They make the Falken Wildpeak in 275/70r17 with a C Rating, but they weigh more than the E-Rated BFG's! I personally think the 275's will fit the truck better than the 265's.

Will running E-Rated tires on a Tacoma turn it into a dog and make it ride rough? Or will there not be much noticeable difference?

Id really like to see a picture of a first gen with 265/70r17 and 275/70r17 with a similar body height to make the comparison...

    It will effect milage some.
Far as ride I've always ran mud tires so idk.
I definitely couldn't tell the big difference most all the members on here seem to think they do going 8 ply.

Hey guys. I'm pretty content with my 16x8, 0 offset with 265/75r16 setup on my 2000 taco.

However, I really wanna run 255/80r17 on my 97 4runner. Currently have 5100s set at first notch with ome 881s which I like. Removed all mud flaps, no fender flares, already bashed in pinch welds, stock uca's, and arb bumper. Also going to be installing extended bump stops that have been sitting in the shop for months because I've had no time.

I've been thinking about 17x8, 0 offset FN wheels but am curious about 17x7.5 +15mm offset fj wheels. Would like for the 255s to be about dead even with fender...anyone have any thoughts?

    Thanks for any input
