Unless all of the automakers collude on this and keep production low together, like OPEC for oil, all it takes is for one automaker to start flooding the market with inventory and steal others market share.

Will you pay sticker and wait months for a Tacoma where the GMC Canyon can be had with $3k off and plenty to choose from on the lot?

exactly and that’s the beauty of a free market economy…only problem is the U.S. automobile market is in no way a free market. The labor unions, govt, and bureaucratic regulations at the EPA, etc so tightly control the market it’s almost impossible for itself to self-align.

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
I don't know about other locations but in my area there's no way there's 17 days supply, 5-6 at best. Those cars/trucks are also typically cars people are not seeking out, very bare, plain models, I mean there was mostly no cars/trucks in the showroom and when there was it was one and it was sold.

no, but it's the lack of competition that emboldens automakers.
Don't forget there's a 25% tax on pickup trucks if they are not made in US or free trade countries. That essentially shielded domestic production from foreign competition

If was a purely free market, we would see pickup trucks like this made in China available for US consumers

If it was a purely free market GM, Ford and Chevy would no longer exist. Remember the bail-outs?

The big automakers were pouring money into EV production long before California announced it was going to ban ICE sales

Also, if it was a purely free market, gasoline would be waaay more expensive than it is now. The oil industry is heavily subsidized with tax dollars to keep prices artificially low. Look at the military spending required to protect oil investments over seas.

I know, just human nature that we like to cherry pick what's good for us and I fully acknowledge the fallacy that free market would solve society's every woe

Saw a report tonight that due to extreme heat and drought China is in serious energy ( electricity ) issues as
Hydro Power Plants are being cut back bigly, so much so that Toyota basically closed-shop until things get better.

It's not just the States that are suffering the whole world is hot-hot-hot.

This actually isn't too surprising. Profit for new car sales is directly related to floor planning costs, so the quicker you turn inventory the less you spend per unit, and thus the more you make. Selling less units that turn over more quickly at a higher price isn't a bad thing for the dealerships.
