    Hello all,
I have a first gen 4x4 I’ve built out to be a hunting rig, and I’d like to have a car hauler to tow the thing out to my general hunt spots. Call me crazy but if I have to spend 3-10 hours in a truck on the interstate, I’d rather do it in my modern truck with the hunt rig safely behind me.
My mains vehicle is an 2016 F-150, 2.7l ecoboost, the first gen fully kitted out is 4620lbs.
I’ve comfortably hauled a 2 horse all steel trailer with a single 16 hand horse in it with this truck, so I’m assuming a car hauler with this 1st gen will be fine. my problem is I know nothing about buying trailers.
I think I’d be willing to spend 4k or less on a trailer, but I’m also not trying to risk a bad outcome to save some pennies. I found some “awl” brand car hauler trailers on craigslist for around 4k and was very interested, then realized I have literally no idea what I’m buying, so I’m really hoping you fine folks can help me not screw myself over.
    what say you?

    thanks in advance!

Start with weighing your rig and be sure to get the steer and drive axles on different load cells so you can see the total weight of your hunt rig but also the balance between steer and drive axles. Check out the towing section in my build thread linked in my signature if you have never weighed your hunt rig. That should be the first data point before you even consider trailers. Make sure you load it like you are going hunting with a full tank of fuel before weighing in.

Thanks for the response! I’ve had it on a scale already, that’s what that 4620lb was for in my original post. About 2180lbs on the steer and 2440lbs on the drive axel including a full tank and me sitting in it. Plus 260lbs for the hounds, but those would not be hauled in the hunt truck on the trailer, they’d be in the cap of my F150.
I just got word yesterday from the seller of those amw trailers that the 20ft haulers are 1800lbs with a 7000lb gvwr. So with that and the weight of the first gen that would put me me 580lbs under. Is that a reasonable margin for one of these flat trailers?

    2016 f150 2.7eb had the 6 speed transmission.

Check to see your towing capability. My 2018 2.7eb I opted for a heavier tongue weight trailer hitch I believe it was an 1,100/1,200# tongue weight capable class IV. The oem hitch is only rated for 500lbs without weight distribution and most car trailers don’t have weigh distribution capable hitches.

A 7k trailer should be fine. You’re going to want to make sure that you’re loaded correctly with 10% tongue weight.

Also I would consider a flatbed utility trailer over a specific car trailer, you’ll find more use for it in the future. :hattip:

    Edit*
Here is a picture of my setup, trailer and car weighed about 6,600#. That was about 675# tongue weight and the bed of the truck and back seats were full of tools, the car was full of stuff too. We were moving.

Apologies, I missed that. GL with the trailer selection. To me, it looks like you are doing all of the right things before heading to the sales lot.
