What's up everyone? I picked up an 87 factory 22rte 4runner about a year ago. The engine and turbo were trashed, among other things. It has been one hell of a project to say the least. Heres a breif overview.
The motor has been completely rebuilt top and bottom with an LCE kit, dual row timing, street turbo pistons, head studs, the whole shebang. Full machine shop job .020 over, also had to replace the crank bc it was cracked. The stock manifolds are in good shape so we reused those. I hadn't planned on going this deep into the project so I stayed with the ct20 manifold and went with a new Mamba turbo, upgraded to stainless lines. We installed a cx racing turbo pipe kit with all new boots and clamps. New 2.5 inch straight piped exhaust. I also put in AEM boost and AFR gauges so i can see how its handling the mods. Stock AFM, wire harness, ignition (i currently have an MSD coil installed), stock fuel, stock ECU, stock auto trans.
After a bunch of headache because I didn't torque the head studs correctly the first go.....it's up and running. I have driven it about 200 miles, both highway and in town. It's running about 8.5 pounds of boost and my air fuel numbers are good while in boost, 15.0 or more. I have had a really hard time finding some parts, and even harder time finding info. The truck runs good when it runs. If it's hot outside or heat soaked from driving it will not start most of the time. I'm thinking the problem is the igniter wearing out and the heat is increasing the resistance to a point where it malfunctions. I'm not sure though. What are some thoughts or suggestions you guys have? Stock replacements are so insanely priced. I'm about to say screw it and go with a megasquirt, LC ignition and distributor..just don't wanna drop all that cash if it's something I'm missing. Thanks in advance for the help.received_1060430511327917.jpg
