    Story Time With Gritto

    The .222 Rem was the hot new thing for small bore benchrest shooters in the early 50s.
    It also became very popular for varmint shooters.
    My Dad bought a Savage Model 340 in .222 Rem about the time I was born and it shot many groundhogs.
    It was a very plain rifle with a straight tube 4x Weaver scope, nothing fancy.
    I inherited it a little over 20 years ago, and it was still extremely accurate.

    The truth is that the Triple Deuce is obsolete.
    Its progeny, the .223 /5.56 mm has almost completely replaced it.
    Ammunition availability going forward is becoming doubtful.
    For the time being, ammo and brass can be had, but for how long?
    To my knowledge, no rifle manufacturer is currently chambering it.
    Though no doubt there are still some NIB around.

    I foresee dedicated reloaders keeping it (somewhat) alive.
    You anneal .223 brass, run it through a full length .222 resizing die to set back the shoulder and then trim to length.
    If you skip the annealing, you'll risk case splitting, but will have a certain percentage of buggered cases regardless.
    That's a lot of trouble to go to, IMO.

    I sold that Savage to a farm kid at the Club to shoot groundhogs with.
    He couldn't afford much and it was his first centerfire rifle.
    I let him have it for a hundred bucks, along with several hundred rounds of handloads I had worked up for it.
    It seemed like the best home for that rifle. :notsure:
