When the former Lowes near me was doing their clearance sale before the building closed, they had a staff member stationed at the door repeating words to the effect, "You're OK, please ignore the tag alarm, it's never worked right as long as I've been here. Come back tomorrow for even better deals!" She'd been working there over a decade.

I was in the new Lowes today. Just about every exiting customer triggered the alarm. Same as it ever was with the falsing.

Constant false alarms are great training for getting everyone to ignore the alarms.

Anyway, my cats will soon be painted a soothing shade of ultra high temp ceramic flat blue. Lowes was out of the yellow. ;-)

It's going to be a while until I can get my C4 order fulfilled, then weld some extra wings on if needed.

I have the RCI skid plates and there's an optional cat guard that bolts onto the sides of the transmission plate. Have it on my truck and who knows if anyone has tried but my cats are still there.

What does painting the cats actually do besides point the theives directly to where your cats are?

That is all it does. That guy wants to HELP the thieves spot his cats from 20yards away. Scrap yards don't give two shits if it's painted or not painted or vin etched or not vin etched.

Exactly. It’s one of those things that they put out there to make people feel like they actually did something.

Even putting your name or vin numbers on the cats, all can be grinded off. The buyers don’t care. Too much easy money.
There need to be a way for sellers be registered each one before a buyer can buy and buyers need to document to a agency of some kind as a slow the problems.

IMO, and the opinion of all my blue-collar friends that I’ve talked to about it, it’s a waste of time painting or etching Cats. If they need to, thieves will just grind off the numbers and paint with other stolen tools from Home Depot. I’d guess that the police campaigns that are publicly recommending painting and etching Cats are doing it so they can say they’re at least doing something to try and combat the recent surge in thefts.

To each their own though, if someone wants to spend their time and money painting and etching it can’t hurt and it might even help the police catch one or two of the criminals if they happen to stumble across them after they’ve been cut off. But honestly, I think all it does is provide a false peace-of-mind for people who know nothing about mechanical things, Cats, tools, or what criminals do with them.

Why are the scrap metal yards not held responsible for buying stolen goods? Aren’t pawn shops held responsible for the stolen items they buy?

Because of the current law(s) in place. Right now, states do not make you prove ownership of the item you are selling. If you don't have to prove that, then it ain't stolen!

Texas (and other states) are trying to pass laws that make it very difficult for scrap yards to buy auto parts that contain precious metals. I believe Texas is making both the seller and the buyer fill out 2 - 3 forms, pictures must be taken and the seller can only sell an item like that once per year, and they have to provide proof it came off a vehicle owned & registered to them.

How many years will it take for any Federal or State agency to actual do something?
Sure it may cost the tax payers. But this problem needs to be stop.

Manufacturers may need to be required to make it difficult to remove the “cats”, it maybe help?
    But the older vehicle’s

Too bad sealing “cats” is not a serious crime.
For over 50 years America cannot stop DUI, too many innocent families are killed each year. I do not think
    Our government know stop crimes.
Repeat offenders that let out early got the teacher jogger killed. He only did 85% of his time and released to kill again.

Can confirm, one of my cats had a skin issue and needed a bath 3x a week for 4 weeks. Not fun

Good comparison, the shops aren't so much held responsible per se unless they don't do the proper paperwork etc. They have to hold items for a certain time between buying and selling (30 days at least, might be more depending on state law) and if it turns out they bought a hot item they lose the item but not a punishment legally per se.

And yes I totally think a similar thing needs to happen here. Stop the ease of selling and you stem or stop the activity.

Not quite. Some buyers do care. And extra work for cleanup/grinding means easier marks elsewhere. Like all labeling measures, it's back-pressure, not a guaranteed stop.

But my truck is in a monogamous relationship, do I really need to double bag? Is it cheating on me with a meth addict?

You do need to bag it twice. You don't want a group of homeless people fucking inside your truck. You know what they call that? A soup kitchen!
