Learned from experience that Subarus, and boxer engines in general, are prone to leaking head gaskets. The BMW always had some mechanical part that needed to be replaced. Loved those cars but I needed something more reliable which lead me to buying a Tacoma.

over 1.5 million 3rd gens sold and all you see is blown engines? dude get real, forums are the worst spot to look at for quality and reliability. People dont post about how they've had to do nothing to their vehicle.

Things aren’t built the way they used to be no doubt about that but I think in a lot of these cases you don’t get the whole story. Of course there are going to be random failures but Toyota sales an image of this rugged off-road machine and it’s just a midsize passenger vehicle. I think the part of these failures you don’t here is so today I tried driving through a creek and climbing a 60° Bank with my 700 lbs of overland gear and armor which flooded my engine with oil and now I have knocking an other problems. You get I was just driving along at 19 mph just minding my own business and my engine started making this terrible sound and dumping smoke. Not all the problems are caused by the user obviously but I think there are a lot more then they let in for sure. So no. I personally do not think the third gen is trash at all. I do feel it’s significantly overpriced for what you get but that’s most things these days.

I call bullshit. The op is exaggerating claims of them all failing at 35k. Most are making it to near twice that before the big kerplunk
