Where To Buy This Wire Brush?

I've owned this simple round wire brush for about 40 years, got it from the service station I worked at where we used them for prepping tires for patching. I wore this one out in short order doing some rust remediation on my Taco this weekend, and I'd like to find a source for it or get something equivalent. The wire bristles are damned stiff which works great in certain applications.

Note that the bristles should be the same length everywhere, it looks conical because it's worn out. The original diameter is about 3/4". The brush part is replaceable, and of course that's all I really need.

I spent some time searching yesterday - Google, Amazon, Ebay - and didn't see anything like it. It's possible/likely I didn't use the right search terms, but you know how it is; sometimes you need to know what something is called before search is worth a damn.

 

Look for a fitting brush I buy them as needed from McMaster-Carr

YOU can get a hex head brush that will secure with your set screw.

 

I did a Google search using your image. Nothing comes up. I don't think they make them anymore.

Maybe a battery terminal brush may work. Have you check flea markets?

Any chance of this brush was made by someone?

 

That just looks like a standard brush that goes on a threaded rod/handle.

Kind of like one you'd use for a rifle when punching the bore.

Just find a brush itself as really all that holds it in place is that set screw.

 

After some more poking around, I found a reference to a "bore brush" so I searched for that and got a hit

on Amazon that looks just about right. They've got a pack of six too which is what I was hoping to find. Will probably need to cut off some of the length but that's no big deal.

These wire brushes are bigger than the advertised 3/4" diameter, but not so much bigger as to not be usable. They fit perfectly into the tool handle and they're very tough. Got through another batch of rust cleanup yesterday with it, couldn't be happier.

From the product page I think they expect these to be used chucked in a drill. Now that I have spares I may try using them this way.

 

I chuck brushes like that in my drill to clean sockets for light bulbs

It's been really useful to clean up the rusty areas around the welds on my frame. It works better than the full-size wood-handled wire brush I have, perhaps because I can exert more pressure over a smaller area. I can get it into areas that no other brush I've got can get to, as well.

I just purchased an air needle scaler for a good price on Amazon, I'll use that in the appropriate places but really my scale rus is minimal, mostly just surface rust. It'll just save my thumb joints a bit as I continue this project.

Totally. But we got 'em from Chevron along with tire and parts orders, maybe they were included with the boxes of tire patch kits we bought pretty frequently. I know there were a lot of 'em around which is how I ended up with one. Only lasted 40 years, darned cheaply made tools!
