I just bought a 2015 TRD OR that only came with one set of keys. Dealer wanted to charge me $300 for a new set. I read through some threads on here, sounds like only the early models (pre-2010) can be DIY'd. Is that true? Anyone have success with setting up the chip on a later model, and how did you do it?

My ‘10 came with only one key and no fob. Went to Ace Hardware. They plugged a black box into the OBD port and made for a fob for $80. Said they could make another chip key also for $80

So I called Ace and they do have the key, it's $90 programmed. I called a local locksmith and he does it for $65. I guess I don't really need a backup FOB, so I'll go get myself a second key and call it good. Thanks!

While you're there, get a couple of cheap non chipped keys. They're great for hide a key, wallet key, etc.

What good do the non-chipped keys do...the engine won't turn over without the chip right?

Get you into the truck if the key gets locked inside.

So Roger the locksmith made me a new chipped key in less than five minutes. He had this hand held machine that plugged into the truck and looked extremely expensive. He says it has software to do all the various manufacturers keys.

$65. The dealer wanted about $150.

I’d probably just go get another key From Roger but I get what you’re saying, that would save money if you had a broken chipped key.

If you're technically savy you can download techstream, load it onto a windows tablet, grab an odb ii cable and program new chipped keys to your hearts delight. I believe you can only have 4 different chips registered to the vehicle at once, but techstream allows you to unregister.

Would this allow me to program FOBs too?

    Working on it!
2005 Taco owner here. As far as my research is showing, Toyota didn’t let the Taco program a new key like some other models without the use of a software or laptop. Pretty lame.
All I see is guys either using the software method with an OBD cable, or calling a locksmith who can do it.
Going rate in San Diego is $85-120.

I used Tech Stream that I bought off Amazon with the OB Mini VCI. It cost me 30 dollars and turned off the seatbelt chime too.

Do not install the pirated software on your normal computer instead use a Virtual Box to emulate a PC system. Then you can use Windows XP or 10 whichever is native to the software. The software won’t have access to the internet or any files on your computer.
virtualbox.org is where you can find it.

I thought there was a free software, or are those people talking about a pirated version?

The real software cost $1545.00 and 250 for the cable. https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInf...hinfo/html/prelogin/docs/tsliteflyertinfo.pdf

Or get this https://www.amazon.com/J2534-Techst...2508390&sprefix=mini+vci,aps,203&sr=8-3-spons and use Virtual Box incase there is anything in there that you might now want on you computer.

If you plan to keep your toyota for a long time - you should have tech stream. It works on my all three of my toyotas
