we do! We have it reserved each summer from April - October. Our friends have spots next to us so it makes for a great summer of relaxing, bouncing back in fourth between camp grounds and many cocktails. The spots are a very decent size so a lot of slace to do whatever you want. This past weekend we had about 10 people at our spot for a corn hole tournament.

I last read LoTR in maybe 1999 or 2000. The Hobbit before that. I just started re-reading the Silmarillion a couple months ago. I personally find that one truly fascinating, as it tells the entire history of Middle Earth up to the time LoTR comes into play, but it is a challenging, dense story.

Indeed! The one thing I am most intrigued by about Bombadil, is when (Gandalf??) was talking to the Hobbits about Bombadil, he said something like "it is not that Bombadil has power over the One Ring, but rather that the Ring has no power over Bombadil." And also in the same conversation - "Bombadil may accept the Ring in <his realm> to keep it safe, but eventually even he would fall. Last as he was First." First?? First among who? When? Where? If I recall correctly, Bombadil was fascinated by the Ring, asked to see it, put it on, and didn't vanish, like anyone else would have. And Tolkien never gave any background or other explanation for what, exactly, Bombadil was. What "class" of being in the Middle Earth universe he was. Maia? Istari? Valar? Something else?? Obviously a being with significant power of some type. The length of the Bombadil portion of the overall story is non-trivial, which makes me wonder why he developed that arc to the point he did, only to leave it as such a open ended topic.

If I had to guess, I'd say he's a Maiar, or lesser spirit.
"First" or "Eldest" means he was the first to enter into Arda after its creation.
Perhaps he was impatient to do so, and was unwilling to wait for the others?
He has such a pure delight in all of nature...
He doesn't seem to be associated with any of the Valar.
He is incorruptible and cannot be dominated, because he has no wish to dominate others.

    :notsure:

I think it's wonderful that Tolkien leaves us guessing.

I have to put in my 2 cents. It’s always impossible to faithfully recreate books into movies. Directors just don’t have the screen time to include the details that flesh out the characters and locations.

Having said that, I don’t think anyone else could have done LOTR any better. Jackson nailed it in my humble opinion. The casting, locations, script and direction was dead on. He took an epic masterpiece and made it his own.

If I had to be stranded on an island and could only take the books or the movies, it would be a tough choice.
