Not supposedly ... the term is Hydrogen Embrittlement. Hence LoHy rod callouts on many structural components. Hydrogen embrittlement combined with cyclic loading can result in underbead cracking, most commonly diagnosed during the forensic study after thebstructure has collapsed.

Exactly what it is. Acetylene generators of old percolated calcium carbine through water and .... viola, acetylene gas.

No. 300lbs is not the issue. 300 lbs BOUNCING on a long lever is the issue. Give yourself some safety factor...

 

This is exactly my next worry and ultimately what will kill the project. I told him it doesnt matter how thick and strong we make the trays, 2 bikes at 300 a piece + all that metal on a long lever is going to snap the hitch receiver from the dynamic weight.

 

More T fittings

 

Add rods that go up to the roof of the schoolie to eliminate the cantilever.

I still say having Dual Receivers and thicker material would work.

I could do the calculations if I remember. I get distracted very easy.

 

For those that use a respirator, and have facial hair, I suggest this as an alternative to a full face mask -



I used to use the smaller Miller (don't have a pic of it, I threw it away) but that thing always snagged my beard and it'd hurt like hell.

Nice thing about this new mask is that it still fits under either of my welding hoods (but barely).

I do have the hoods sit a tad closer cause of my smaller head.

 

Is Lincoln the only source for filters?? What different types of filters can you purchase?

Do you get a good seal with your facial hair?

 

This kind of what I was thinking. A beard really lets in dirty air.

I have beard too. I think disposable paper filter do just as good as a respirator if you have a beard. I think they are more comfortable. Less sweating.

Lot cheaper too. Just my opinion.

 

I used a filter for Galvanized truck cabs the fumes from the welder on the other side would get sucked up into the door post across between 2 roof layers and down the door post working up under my hood.

 

Only Lincoln style filters, which was the same ordeal with the Miller mask and it having a proprietary filter.

The filters don't cost much but they're supposed to last much longer based on their design as they're facing away from anything forward of it.

Here's how the Miller is set up -



I could see all the metal specs (not to mention discoloration) from everything it filtered against. The downside being that the filters would get used up pretty damn fast being exposed like that.

The mask itself costs roughly the same as do the filters.

As for sealing? None would fully seal having facial hair like I do, but it definitely covers much more and I'd say it definitely seals a lot better than the Miller did.

 

Paper filters are definitely way cheaper, and would filter out all those small particles but I don't think they'll specifically filter out welding fumes and whatnot.

I could buy a few different filters for different interesting chemicals

I hated having to shave for working in refineries the only time I ever did.

 

I can get discounts on a PAPR but still hard to justify two grand ha. Been breathing quite poorly though so may bite the bullet.

 

If you do it for a living, not hard to justify.

But for a hobbyist? I'd say overkill.

 

I knew a company that built sliding boards for children.

One of the cleanest welding jobs I ever saw company bought all the welder those PAPR hoods .

Plus fume extractors in every booth.

 

Only 9-12 hours a day haha.

Just out of curiosity, if you want to use the receiver, do you have to reach up under the bumper to put in a pin? Not a big deal if you don't plan on using it often and likely a value based decision (i.e. clearance was more important than receiver function due to frequency of use)....

 

It will almost never be used, but I do plan on leaving a recovery hitch in there with a pin.

The pin (accessible underneath) is kind of tight but will have a bit more clearance once I cut a bit more metal out.

Still in the 'design' phase atm.
