BC building code and soon the Canadian National building code require all new buildings constructed as of 2030 to be 'net zero ready'

I believe in California new construction homes must have solar panels. From what i remember reading.

BC introduced a 5 step Energy Code that introduces incremental increases in performance requirements for new construction with respect to insulation values , airtightness and window and door performance that culminates at Step 5 in 2030 with net zero ready homes that will be 80% more efficient than Step 1 code compliant houses were in 2018

Canadian National Code is going to adopt the BC code requirements in its next revision

Cutting concrete and rebar is still mostly gas powered.

My point was that battery technology is evolving. 10 years ago I wouldn’t have imagined a battery powered cut off saw. My foundation subs are now using them alongside the older gas powered ones.

Oh I know! :) our concrete saws and trash pumps are gas powered, but everything else has moved to battery.

Was joking that some people are having a hard time wanting to move to an EV, but gas power tools never really took off, other than a handful for specific jobs.

Have been converting my lawn equipment to battery. So nice, so quiet.

Buddy of mine had one of those Homelite circular saws. Used it a few times, kinda cool…but mostly annoying.

Guess that is another question, what is going to happen to all the petroleum powered vehicles when EVs go mainstream? That is an environmental disaster within itself.

I think there will be a move to sustainable fuels for petrol cars for the transition period away from them , F1 is introducing a new engine formula for the 2026 season with 100% sustainable fuel as part of the mix

I was thinking more about recycling them. Just look at recycling plastics, that turned into a big lie.

My RAV4 Prime is the commuter. Gets the job done but for road trips that’s when the gas burner comes out of the garage. Fun vehicles will always be ICE for me.

If Audi ever decides to release this though…

I worked with a guy in Fort Wayne who’d made his one-owner Chevy S-10 an electric vehicle because he could. Electrical engineers are weird that way. Whole bed was lead-acid batteries. Upgraded the suspension to support them. Even with all that extra weight that truck could scoot.

That was 2012. I can only imagine he’s been vulturing junkyards looking for wrecked Teslas.

If he still has it, I bet that S-10 really gets it now.

none of that equation is effected by new vehicles being EV instead of ICE , old ICE cars are being taken out of service every year , thats not changing

Seems as though you still have no clear understanding of the current complex energy and resource dynamics in the western US over the past few weeks with historical drought and heat, and how that is being played out around the world. Water and food security is at serious risk, and existing infrastructure to manage it is mostly and end of life and/or not suited to changing conditions.

With great freedom comes great responsibility and civic-mindedness.

You think about all the effort expended into extracting oil and turning it into petrol, then shipping it all over the globe, you would think it would be sold for much more than it actually is. A few benefits in allowing (making/forcing/encouraging) more investment in electric vehicles, including diversification. I don't have to tell you who holds the ownership or extraction rights to these natural resources, and I also don't have to tell you that these relationships can be fickle. Electric vehicles can be powered by any number of power sources.

Yes, the power grid needs to be updated. But it does regardless of the increased strain from electric vehicles. Impact studies on how solar activity is a closely guarded secret in the industry, but the US (and Canada, per rumor) is not prepared by any stretch of the imagination for a major solar event. You might think that makes your argument against electric vehicles more powerful, but you still need the ability to pump the gas. If we're going to need to invest billions into upgrading our electric grid, it's minimal impact to also build it out at the same time to handle the increased load from charging at home.

The other aspect that complicates all of this, without getting political, is that the US is a country where urban/suburban planning is dictated by people driving. This mindset needs to change, and allow for more communities set up that you don't have to use a car to do every single thing. Walkable communities, better interaction between retail and housing. More mixed use, more ability to get places by walking/cycling/scootering, etc. There are few communities now that allow for true mixed use, less setbacks, and less need for 5k parking spaces for a local store. Have trails to get places, not just for exercise.

And yes, I know the arguments that you live out in the country or you have to travel 150 miles one way to get to work.

Also, the advancements in gasoline have been miniscule since modest refining started in 1895. Battery development is always improving as the months go by. The way batteries for EV's are created now will be different 15-20 years from now. They are always improving.

I kinda think the last 10 years has seen pretty significant advances in ICE, but I think we may have run out of headroom on future innovation on ICE. Electrics on the other hand are just starting to roll. If the infrastructure can be developed I believe it is the way of the future.

I hear ya. But I was talking about advancements in gasoline itself. Not the entire car and systems.
