Sounds like it is a soft credit check and based on your credit score to determine your rate. So asking around isn't going to mean anything unless you are also comparing to similar credit scores.

 

Makes sense. I was thinking sometimes I see very low rates but after looking at the link I think that’s always for pay-in-4 type plans. Probably better off with something like an RV loan for 5-6%.

 

Dont do it man. You can camp and have just as much fun w a traditional tent. For like 12500 less.

 

You can't get an RV loan on the SuperPacific, GFC, Vagabond, etc... Only a few companies qualify as a product for an RV loan, like Adventure Trailers (AT) Summit/etc, 4Wheel Campers.

 

Agreed. If you MUST have a wedge camper, save up and pick up a second hand V2 GFC for $6000. Or a worn out, V1 with the hinges replaced after the doors fell off.

 

I like the GFCs but seems like most people are only discounting by $200

 

I appreciate this. I have a soft top and drawers and use a Gazelle and mostly I’m happy. I just am always looking for ways to decrease the effort required to get out.

 

Tend to hold value. Plus, now with the V1, you can swap to the V2 style tent with doors and stuff. They finally got the hinge figured out.
I usually see V1 for 3-5k, V2 for 5-7k

 

That sounds like a great set up. I got my Super Pacific for around 8k. I honestly wouldn’t pay the current price.

I do like it. 8k was about the max I was willing to pay. I just think a lot of these campers are overpriced. It’s a fancy tent at the end of the day. I forgot the exact prices, but back when I was considering what I wanted a smart cap camper shell was about 3-3.5k and a hard sided RTT was 3-4K so I figured getting a super pacific was roughly the same price and it would give me the ability to fully stand up in it. At the 13k price I wouldn’t have made the purchase. If I had to start over now, I’d probably go with a smart cap or Alucab camper shell and a gazelle tent/ arb awning room. Use the other 9k or so for other things haha

 

Same... We snuck in and grabbed someone's spot who paid 8k.. but we got stuck paying the first increase, so 9600.. that was kind of a bummer and definitely wouldn't pay anymore or the current prices. Same reasoning.. I'd rather just piece together a different setup.. or spend the time and DIY and get EXACTLY what I want out of a wedge camper. I do think the wedge style/concept is great.. so it would be hard to go back to a tent/bedrack+rtt setup. So I'd be tempted to build one if anything happened/changed in the future. Otherwise.. my wife and I still think the bedrack/cap+rtt setup is the best bang for the buck by far, especially when compared to a wedge. There's things I still miss about our old rtt setup..

 

Thanks for the insight. I'm curious what you prefer about the typical bed rack + rtt setup? To me--price aside--it seems like the wedge camper should be superior in pretty much every way.

That's fair. But I'm also not sure of @XPOTRPR 's issues are specific to the X1.

 

My two cents: there's DIY wedge camper forum on TW and I looked into building my own, discovered that unless I could sew a tent and weld a frame it would cost me almost as much as a GFC. GFC V2 wasn't out yet and SP looked like a better design for a few K more, so I jumped. If storing your stuff under a rack exposed to weather and thieves, unfolding a RTT and climbing up a ladder in the rain, etc. works for you, don't spend the money on an SP. I like having my stuff secure and having the option of leaving it packed in the bed while I sleep up top. Not to mention great side doors and a good mattress included. Not 100% perfect but pretty much what I always wanted in a light and tight camper.

 

Thanks. I ran an open rack and RTT for a year and really hated having my gear exposed to potential thieves and the elements. I was always paranoid about leaving it parked and it got soooooo dusty. As much as I loved the RTT it was painful enough for me to switch back to the soft top and ground tent. My rationale for a wedge camper is:

1) weight savings by having a pre-combined system (GFC is ~250lbs compared to 175lbs for a shell + 150lbs for a tent - I think the X1 is about a wash)
2) cost of a good metal shell like an RLD, AluCab, or RSI is ~$3500, a good RTT is $3000. Getting pretty close to the cost of a combined camper
3) being able to access the bed from the tent enables things like a shared power/lighting setup and setting up a heater in the bed.

I'm unsure if I think those extra benefits are worth the premium over buying separate. I really like the quality-of-life improvements of the X1 over the GFC, but they are definitely charging for it.

 

Coming from backpacking, regular "tent" camping. For me, the attraction to the wedge camper, specifically the XP, was ease. I can build all sorts of things into the set up, and not have to do anything but keep a battery charged and pop the top. XP has a way better ordering and payment process than the other options at the time. I personally think its nuts to pay 50 percent or even all of the coat for these campers up front, then be made to wait like 2 years for the end product. I also had a couple specific requests of SP and they went above and beyond to accommodate me. That was huge, and appreciated.

 

It's really just little things in the tent design and might just be us being picky or having personal preferences. My wife and I both realized we prefer the mesh/window/rain covering configuration of our RTT. Having the weatherproof flap on the inside on an RTT vs the outside like the SP was nice. Being able to unzip one layer to QUICKLY and easily see out or get air flow vs having to unzip and go through the mesh, then the outside solid layer to see out. It just makes for a more cumbersome experience imo. I wish the SP had window coverings/rain fly/awnings over all 3 windows just like RTT's do. Then they can be propped up/open with poles like anything else. Material connected on 3 sides to protect from rain, more shade, etc. All RTT's have them or some variation nowadays. I also realized this last weekend when it started to sprinkle at night.. that I needed to get out and go down to close up the tailgate and rear hatch, as it was essentially leaving our living room exposed to the rain. Before.. with our bedrack and RTT setup.. everything was weatherproof anyways (because it needed to be) and if it started raining at night.. there were no changes that needed to be made. Awnings are already popped open on the RTT by default.. so if it rains, even with the solid layers open (able to see through mesh) the rain doesn't enter the tent. With all this though.. I'm sure her and I will adapt with more outings.. and those issues will become less annoying. Overall.. we still VERY much love our X1.. and the pros still outweigh the cons.

 

Very good points. It would be nice to able to unzip one size not 2. I see why they did it but def some options would be better. Also fly’s on the side would be a nice option. Almost if they designed the door different we could hack it. Similar to others I jumped in with some others on pre launch pricing and after selling my shell and rack the overall price wasn’t too bad. $13k is steep for the number of issues I’ve ran into. The camper needs a better fitment to 2nd gens to even think of the current pricing. If the front lip was designed to work with the format of the truck ( or they added a flat bat similar to @XPOTRPR ), better mounts and current door latches or a better latch ( mine do not close all the way and always need adjustment and still not great) maybe. I knew going in early we would have issues. Our price I have been okay still and it’s great but def some annoying 1st (maybe 2nd) version annoyances.

Overall my time to beer number are great and when I arrive. 5 minutes or less. Once a I get a mild build out the time to go numbers should be great.

Unless your constantly on the move and long trips it’s a high cost for “camping”
