I’d scrub the rust off those splines. Then add a bit of grease to them.
I used a “THIN” coated of Lucas Red n’ Tacky. Brand and type doesn’t really matter.
That’s what I used because that’s what was handy.

How easily did the cv seat after doing that? The rust color in the picture is actually anti seize. Regardless, I am going to scrub the splines until they're spotless and reapply a little lithium grease as you said.

Mine slide right on the with no issues.
It only got a slight bit tight when it was almost all the way seated into the knuckle.
And that was due to the knuckle and not the spline shaft.

I’d be careful using the axle nut to press it on. I personally wouldn’t recommend it.
If you ever have to remove the hub again, it’s not going to be fun.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. If I ever have to change a cv or hub I'm going to have to beat the crap out of it

The factory hub took very little effort to remove from the cv.

Or worse, take the knuckle off with the CV and THEN beat on it. Not good.

Which leads me to believe something isn't right about the new hubs

The factory hub is back on the truck and it went back on easily.

When you get to the point of replacing the cap on a new hub, just use a pair of pliers or channel locks, go around the cap, slightly bending the lip in. This will take several tries but you'll eventually get that lip curled in enough to get it started. Then you can smack it in with a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer.
Put grease all around that lip before you seat it and it will help keep water out.

I’m curious, try counting the splines on your CV versus the new hub.

The truck is my daily so I had to put it back together with the factory hub. I counted the splines in the new hub and there's 30. I don't think it's a spline count as I can get the factory cv to pass through the new hubs just enough to get the axle nut threaded on but that's it. After that, the only way to get cv to pass through is crank down the axle nut and it gets stiff real quick

Tried both new hubs on the same axle, same result

I’m going to have to agree.
I suppose it’s worth asking, but is the CV axle OE?
If so, it’s a hub issue.

Not sure what brand the hubs are. Dorman or something

Then the splines or bore in the hub is under sized.
    I’d try new hubs.

That explains it. Doorman is certainly not high on the quality list in my opinion.

FWIW, I went with Beck/Arnley assemblies.

If you want the best, buy from @05Taco4x4
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/wheel-bearings-hubs-press-service-4x4-6-lug-2wd.537080/

If you want to know why I didn’t buy from him. (Because I get asked this a lot)
It’s because I bought “expensive” hubs from a former member here. Who’s since been banned.
Those hubs didn’t last 30k. And I’m stubborn. So I said Fùćk it, and bought “middle of the road” assemblies this time. Because I was still crying over the price of the first ones I bought. I can’t give you good opinion on the B/A assemblies. I’ve only had them on for about 15k. I will say that the dust seal they send were loose in the back of the knuckle. I had to modify mine with a hammer to make them fit tight.:D

Again, I HIGHLY recommend @05Taco4x4 assemblies.
