I've been searching around for a base 22 M/T TRD OR 4 door and just found one pretty close to it a state away. It is a returned lease with 5,000 miles. Dealer sent me pics and a detail sheet without fees on it. On page 2 it it looks like he intends to charge a destination fee and a PPO fee that's included with his holdback. I'm unable to find a solid answer online about if charging a destination fee on a used car is a legitimate fee or a bullshit dealer markup. I thought the destination fee was associated with new cars coming from port and was always worked into the MSRP, not as an additional fee after MSRP. I'm really confused about the PPO inclusion with the dealer holdback. A DIO I get, but what they do? Send the truck back to port for some Predator steps and floor mats, lol? I know that's not it, but dang, it sure reads that way. Does this read as b.s. to anyone else or am I misunderstanding something? From what they're asking for the truck, which is overpriced in my opinion, I think he's blowing smoke straight up my ass.... and Oregon's on fire watch over here!

Honestly, it doesn’t even matter. Most likely it's bullshit. dealers have unlimited ways to come up with bullshit. Your pic is a standard. But what is bullshit? You have to look around and know what the going rate is. What is the price you’re willing to pay/what are you willing to go through?
By going through this process many times, it’s all about knowing your price and knowing the market.
to answer your question, yes it’s bullshit

This. I paid new MSRP for a 19 because it was available, the dealer certified it, put a hitch on for free, and I paid no tax and didn’t pay payments on a truck I didn’t have yet.

    Worth it.

I haven't bought since my first generation Tacoma so, it's been a bit of a moment since I've worked with dealers. I'm am just wanting to make sure my thought process is correct before I start spewing out "wtf's" and "you gotta be smoking crack" statements.

yeah, I get it, in this market, your goal is MSRP. if they’re throwing a $300 tint package on there that they refused to take it off then is it worth you going three states away to get one that is exactly at MSRP?

Well like I said before, call the closest 20 if you care enough to move in that range and take the best offer

Without even reading about the issue in question; I can most assuredly state that when this question pertains to a dealer, then this is by far the most likely case…

All i can say is when my truck came in, the dealer charged a $600 doc fees that they wouldn't waive. I checked into it, and yes they were legally entitled to charge that much in that state.

This is the best way to do it. It avoids a lot of haggling...put the top 2 against each other and let them fight for your business. I paid $34.6k for my loaded '18 OR 4-door using this method. MSRP was $39k.

IMHO the salesperson just printed their internal inventory sheet and sent it to you. In reality what he sent you should have stopped at the Total Price line. They get a holdback, usually quarterly, on every new unit they sell. It has nothing to do (directly) with the price you pay.

I tried really hard to buy a base 2022 Trail in army green, but every dealer that had one wanted to add a bunch of fluff in either accessories, etching, or warranties. I made a few offers to what I thought was fair, I even included a few things I might not normally buy from the dealer. One even tried selling me a dash cam for 715 bucks. Lol I told them it was bullshit and operating In the grey zone here as you are not allowed to advertise a price in Alberta and then add stuff afterwards. I was so frustrated that I ended up buying used. I had to pay a higher interest rate but at least I don’t have to deal with their shady tactics.

Destination fees are charged by manufacturers to get the vehicle to the dealer (shipping costs). Unless this dealer intends to ship the vehicle to YOU, that charge is bogus. That does not necessarily mean they are going to remove it though. Strange new world of negotiations when the dealers have the pricing upper hand.

    Oh look, another mod....
I really wish people would stop posting about what they paid for their 16', 17', 18' or 19' truck. Times have changed dramatically when it comes to car buying, inflation and interest rates are through the roof. Stop telling people "Oh, that's too much because I paid $xxx for my truck and I would never pay that much ever for a Tacoma!" People always forget to factor in for inflation.

To the OP: It sounds like the guy is blowing smoke up your ass. The fee's are for new vehicles only. I bet if you tell him to remove it, he'll do it without any push back. Good luck on your purchase.

I really think this is just the dealer's inventory sheet from when the truck was new and has nothing to do with what they are charging you for the truck. He probably just sent it to you as a quick way to show you how the truck is equipped. There are no amount lines on any of those items. You can simply contact your salesperson and verify this is the case. If those things were on an actual buyer's order, that would be a different story.

regardless of inflation a bad deal is a bad deal no matter how you slice it. Currently there are dealers that sell at a fair price both new and used. Overpaying can be avoided.

My post had nothing to do with today's sale price vs. '18 or inflation. It had to do with letting dealers compete for your business. That netted me $4.5k under MSRP, as noted in my post, regardless of inflation.

Draw me a sketch of where the bad dealer man touched you...

While dealers want to sell you a car, they have no problem letting people walk away vs in years past where they would work a little for the sale. Don’t like the price? On a Tacoma they may come down a hundred if you buy it right now. Otherwise high demand keeps people who want it right now paying their asking price. They don’t need to discount to sell them today, and they definitely aren’t going to get in a reverse bidding war with another dealership to not lose the sale. Someone else will buy it the next day.

If they are charging too much and won’t budge then walk away and keep looking. Tacoma customers have no other leverage in this market.

Bull crap or not. It doesn't matter. You pay or you leave. They have the upper hand. When you go there, you will find out there's an additiona $5k just because.
