Hello everyone newbie here seeking help on p0500 code. I know this has been asked a million times but i have read and researched so much i think im starting to over think this. My tacoma is an 09 base model with 5 speed manual, 2 wheel drive no frills model. The speedometer started bouncing then stopped and have no odometer with cel and traction light and p0500 code with speed sensor A malfunction and the tach works fine. What is the most common fix for this and i also read that wrong size tires may cause this, I did go from the factory 215/70/15 to 235/75/15 tires about 50 or so miles ago. All help is greatly appricated.

Have you replaced your speed sensor?

A change in tire size would not cause the symptoms described.

A better question is why would the speed sensor fail?

Possibly old age but they're a pretty basic and reliable sensor, when's the last time you replaced your transmission oil?

Have you gone under your truck and looked for damages?

Could have hit something or or rodent could have chewed the sensor's wires.

Hello key-Rei I have not replaced the speed sensor as of yet it just sterted this a couple of days ago and we are finally getiing some much needed rain here so I was getting prepaired to search for the issue when it stops raining. Do you think the sensor is the problem? I have only had the truck a couple of months and tranny grease is on the list to get changed. Thanks.

This is exactly what mine did and it was the speedo sensor gear on the transmission as @TnShooter mentioned. It is on the passenger side at the rear

i can get a picture if needed

    Thanks man.
I don’t have a 5 spd manual in my truck.
If I did, I’d would have grabbed a pic. I figured you’d know right where it was

I have an 08 pre-runner with a four-cylinder and five speed manual. I had that code pop up many times. The speed sensor and nylon speedometer gear wwre replaced several times. The dealer then replaced my instrument cluster. Since then, I’ve only had that code once. I went to the dealer and got a new speedometer gear for my truck, I replaced it and the problem has not returned. I would start with the speedometer gear as it’s only about 20 bucks and see if the speedometer stops working again. I keep a new speedometer gear in my center console at all times. Takes only 10 to 15 minutes to change it out. Since I’ve kept a spare, I’ve had no issues for the last three years.

You remove the driven gear assembly by removing the single hex head bolt and not the three Phillips head screws.

    Manual Transmission?

    P0500 Code:

    Manual Transaxle Models:
Vehicles, which are equipped with manual transaxle, detect the vehicle speed using the No. 1 vehicle
speed sensor. The No. 1 vehicle speed sensor transmits a 4-pulse signal for every revolution of the rotor
shaft, which is rotated by the transaxle or transfer output shaft via the driven gear. The 4-pulse signal is
converted into a more precise rectangular waveform by the waveform shaping circuit inside the
combination meter. The signal is then transmitted to the ECM. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of the pulse signal.

#1 Speed sensor >> Combination Meter >> ECU

The # 1 Vehicle speed sensor is in the transmission on non-4X4 vehicles and in the transfer case for 4X4 vehicles.
