I had the exact same issue... previous owner with sloppy foot placement habits. I've already painted to cover up the worn-through spot, but some extra protection to make sure it doesn't happen again is even better.

 

I had some rust under my 2nd gen sill protectors, even after repairs a few years ago. Removed 2nd gen protectors, repaired/repainted sills and installed 3rd gen protectors on my 2nd gen. They are nice and provide the extra benefit of being thin and sitting under the plastic threshold, which is an area I had problems before with rust.
