Thing about it, there is tons of good stuff at reasonable prices thats not hyped to death.

    Anything from Wild Turkey
    Knob Creek Line
    Maker's Mark Line
    EW BiB
    Larceny

Old Tub is one of the most excellent bourbons out there and the ABCs around me are lousy with em 8 deep and it's $25 a bottle.

If you aren't interested in the hype and just want good sip whiskey, there's plenty of options.

Jokes on that doofus lol. Standard Eagle rare comes in two different bottles, one says 10 year and one doesn't. There is no difference. People are crazy these days.

They all say 10 year. The age statement used to be on the back, more recently was moved to the front.

Maybe they changed the label and still have old stock? These both came out of the same case last week. Two different labels.

That is correct. It was a label change this year.

Must be, this has just happened over the last couple months, although it does surprise me that a case would have both types of labels.

Maybe you got the case where the switchover happened :) might be worth big money!

I've been browsing this thread and decided to just ask. What's a good mellow whiskey for a new whiskey drinker?

I bought a bottle of Roknar this weekend and all I taste is alcohol, my only other experience with whiskey is shooting fireball and screwball. Trying to refine my tastes some to join the mature adult club.

Blanton's $80 down in GA in my store. Seems it varies from store to store. I snagged 2 or 3 bottles in the last 3 months.

Buffalo Trace. Great tasting with just ice. .75L is $26 in my parts. That's my normal go to bourbon.

When the question starts with "What's a good whiskey for..." the answer is always Wild Turkey 101.

If you're looking to get into neat whiskey (as in, whiskey with nothing added), then I would start with WT 101, Buffalo Trace, or Evan Williams Bottled in Bond for bourbons. Monkey Shoulder or GlenLivet 12 if Scotch interests you. These will all work on the rocks as well if that's your jam.

All of these except the Glenlivet are under $30 for a 750mL.

    My go tos:

    Buffalo Trace
    Eagle Rare
    Angel's Envy
    Blanton's
    EH Taylor Small Batch
    Stagg
    Weller Antique

I did not care for regular 4 Roses, but heard good things about Single Barrel 4 roses.

Buffalo Trace I stock in regular .75, and in 1L, and 1.75L bottles, it is that good, IMHO

Grab a Larceny. Low proof, smooth, inexpensive, delicious.

    One final note:

With bourbon, pay attention to proof.

Scotch/Irish/Japanese/Canadian whiskies usually run in the mid-90s and below proof range. Even the cask strength offerings are not usually too high, being in the hundreds to hundred-teens.

Bourbon, on the other, starts in the 80s and goes all the way up to Oh Fuck Help Me Jesus! Barrel proof bourbons in the 120s are not uncommon, and some brands like Stagg, Jack Daniel's, and Frey Ranch go into the 140s.

Jack even made a special release called Coy Hill that went up as high as 155.1:

    https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/jack-daniel-whiskey-high-proof-203000679.html

    So: Read the label.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm in the Tequila/Agave Spirits business so often I'm drinking 100+ proof samples at my desk.

If you're used to that level of proof, you may find bourbons below 90 proof pretty unsatisfying.

These days I don't find much I like below 90, and almost all my favorites are 110 and up.

All this whiskey jabber put me in the mood.

But I haven't had whisky in a while, so we'll go that direction.

I need to revisit Larceny. A buddy of mine got it for the office and I was never a fan, need to try it again.
