I have a 2003 Tacoma 2wdPre-runner TRD double cab. It has Bilstein shocks (original). I have 287K miles on it. It runs great. How do I check to see if the shocks are worn out? Should I just assume they are worn out because of the mileage? On a car or regular truck you can bounce the car to test the shock or look for leaks. There doesn't seem to be a change in the ride or any unusual tire wear. No leaking shocks. Thanks

    4 run, 2 don't
They've been long overdue for about 14 years or 237k miles now.

They probably are worn out by now. At least the rubber bushing is, even if you feel like the shock is still working correctly based on "feel." If you're just looking for stock replacements (which I gather you would be, since the originals have lasted you this long), then you want some Bilstein 4600 shocks. Two of them, obviously. To do the replacement, you'll either need to rent a spring compressor from your local auto parts store, or take your old coilovers and the new shocks to a shop that will swap the springs over for you (for a fee).

You may also consider replacing the rear shocks if those are original as well.

When you're all done, you might realize that your current setup was worn out!

Also recommend the Bilstein 4600. Had them installed at 165k on my 02 and have been great.
