If you have the room to store it, I suggest a UTV/SXS or a dirt bike. I’ve become skeptical about turning a stock pickup truck into something capable of approximating a purpose built go fast off road vehicle.

I will say that my taco does a lot better than a typical automobile and that slow going SXS’s have pulled off trails to let me through. If I had been driving the same SXS, no taco was going to pass me.

It might be fun to buy an Ultra4 car too.

Jeez. I’m maybe 20-30k in parts not counting the truck. I’m not sure about travel but I’d love to have that in my account instead. My truck worked just as well for what I use it for too.

Oh well. Gotta waste money on something I guess.

I live on a 730 square mile patch of basalt.

for me long travels are out of the question.

    enough to go over stuff
It depends on what you want to do with the truck. Think fast in the desert then 3.5'. if your planning on going through tight trails and trees then 2".

Think it was this SDHQ FJ with a LS swap. Remember reading somewhere the owner saying if he had to do it again…

you are right. I do 45-70mph in the desert here with my setup out by the Snake River and what not here in ID and it’s fast for these trails…AZ can’t be much different unless there is more lava rock (which would be a tire upgrade expense). Long travel would not really show much improvement because the brakes, enforcements, and other components would need upgrade to handle better at high speeds. OP, as others have said, this is a deep money task that involves lots of attention and devotion

Depends where you are in AZ with the lava rock, bunch up around Flag…but the whole damn state is rather rocky. Running joke with my AZ friends “rocks are my friends” There is some high speed stuff, but the whoops are so deep, long travel is kinda useless…unless you are going full tilt. Like about the only thing left stock is the cab, and you lop the frame off at the firewall and behind the cab, and do a “proper” suspension…and at that point might as well go full race cage and all ‘glass body.

Those Can Am Mavericks start at $20K…take a hell of a lot more beating than a Tacoma can. Of course they are also money pits.

There are bunch, Total Chaos, Camburg, Baja Kits…bunch of others. More or less all the same. Upper control arms…and pick the shocks you want, Kings, Fox, OME, Sway-a-Way (not even sure they are still in business)

Haven’t really paid too much attention these last few years, got into dirt bikes moved to Idaho, and lost interest in prerunners.

Hiem joints (the spherical bearings) on the shock ends and some uppers are a bit high maintenance, they don’t like the de-icer/salt/mag chloride they use on the roads here.

Had all that on my 1st Gen, pulled it all after a couple years and went back to a basic OME setup.

If you have the money, do it. Dont give a shit what other people think. How many hellcats do you see in traffic? ALOT. They are meant for a racetrack and still drive on public roads.

Im putting 3.5 lt on my 05 tacoma with 225k miles as we speak. I know its going to be a complete waste. I work too hard not to build what I want. I love cars. I work on them all day long and want to be excited about something.

    And thats my truck.

What they are saying is, you can buy you a side by side that will do all what you want for the same prices as fixing your Taco up.
And, what they are saying, you can still have the Taco for a daily driver.
They are also saying you will ruin the Taco for daily driving if you do this. It will squeak, Weeze, fart and ride horrible on the road.

You understand this right? This is not a $5K mod. This is a $35K mod with no road truck left.
