Troubleshooting a transmission I might have jacked up

    2003 prerunner
    Background:

Doing a 4x4 swap on a 2003 prerunner. I removed the output shaft and transfer case adapter(tail housing) from a junked 99 4runner transmission. I am using a Jshift tcase and manual hubs.

I opened up my prerunner transmission, swapped the output shafts and assembled in the reverse order. Nothing looked too bad while I was in there, but i don't know what i'm doing. I then put the transmission back in the truck.

    Situation:

It starts up fine, shifts through all gears, took about 10 quarts of fluid (i did not drain/empty the torque converter when it was out). It only starts in park and neutral and seems to be pumping as I can feel the heat in the trans cooler lines.

Well heres the problem, the shit is stuck in forward. When I put the truck in reverse I can hear the throttle change, but I get no movement. If I give it gas, at about 1200rpm, it starts to go forward. This happens in all gears except park.

The truck will not move in reverse, even when in neutral.

From my research it seems to be that the forward clutch is stuck, that would most likely need a full teardown and reassemble to fix.

    What I have tried:

Thought maybe I overtightened the valve body. I removed valve body and retorqued it and the two center support bolts. No fix

I jacked up the rear axle, chalked the shit out of the front wheels and with the selector in neutral, gave it a bunch of gas. My thought was maybe that would free it from being stuck. Wheels just kept moving forward.

    Cleaned electrical connectors.

Anyone got any suggestions on things to try before I yank this thing back out? Any ideas, input, or trolling is welcome. I guess this is why transmission shops exist, fuck. Funny thing is it felt really good and went smooth when I was doing the swap.

    thanks

    Hey Mat

Just got back from my trip
Umm , yah , things dont sound good dude .
The most common problem that I can think of is when you are dropping the clutch drum for forward down into the transmission . There is a darn good chance one of the clutches is binding , This will cause forward all the time .
Do you have an overhaul manual for the transmission ?
you can find everything you need here

Thanks for the info and taking the time to check the thread out. I’m to grips with yanking it back out and taking my time redoing it, or having it rebuilt.

I’ll chalk that first try up as practice.
