Picked up a 2013 trd with 120k on it. I paid 8k knowing engine was trashed oil pump went out is what I’m told. Should I get one from salvage yard or possibly rebuild? I have experience rebuilding Diesel engines in heavy equipment but almost no experience with gas engines

Very unusual for an oil pump to fail on a 4.0L, I'm thinking something else happened...
    Is the engine locked up?

It needs a new battery I was going to see if will turn over or what. I was told it was taken to Toyota for diagnosis but I haven’t done any digging myself

Yea extremely unlikely. If it's just the bottom end You can get a new short block from Toyota for around 3k.

If you go this route you will need a 12-15 model engine because of the secondary air injection system.

Found a 2015 engine with 3k miles or $2700 at a junkyard, just call around and you’ll find something

Nice. If the rest of the truck is clean. Even if you put 10k in it. You could resell for a nice profit all day long. Good find!!! Great project!!!

I can make you a deal on a brand new short block that just needs the block decked. (Pm me if you want the details)

    located in the Austin area.

All of the junkyard engines I found were $3500+ with 100k+

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
I had an old cj7 with a straight 6 (during my identity crisis). The only thing I liked about that jeep was that motor. I'd love to have its torque in a taco.

I think any 4.0, I am not sure if computers are the same. It bypasses the secondary air injection crap. Use block off plates and it gets rid of the system itself and plugs in a dummy harness

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
If you run an air pump engine on a non air pump truck you just need to run manifolds that can block off the sais ports on the heads. Other than those holes in the heads, they’re the same engine
