Where Have You Off-Roaded Today? 3rd Gen

Pretty flawless! Did actually break the shifter, but was install miscalculation/guessed it might happen. Thought my poly motor/tcase mounts were going to be here for the first trip but they got delayed, so just ran the stock soft mounts this weekend. Shifter ended up breaking from the drivetrain flexing, and the shifter contacting the center console pretty hard since I didnt leave much room for flex (drivetrain will hardly move once I put the poly mounts in). Otherwise, truck has gobs of torque now and can lightly throttle up anything. Shorter rear driveline is nice, as it doesnt hang as low as the stock one.

Finally did it. Got to see Colorado and finally get to check off Black Bear pass. Man, this is by far the most fun but most scary trail we’ve done. Had a small mishap near the waterfall with a sliced sidewall but other than that it was such an awesome beautiful trail. Here’s my full trail review and adventure:

Quick day trip down Holcomb Valley Rd. Plenty of fun puddles due to Hurricane Kay. 1990 4x2 Ranger handled this road no problem

I took mine on the water today

 

It is technically "off road" but hardly offroading. Little surf fishing this morning.

 

Another fishing trip, 4 days fishing small remote lakes in the Lac Le Jeune area. Caught a number of 16 inch rainbows. Got to fish alone again at 3 small lakes. In my books no company is the best company when off road. If I see another human, I might as well go the mall.

One of the lakes had some white barrels left over by wildfire crews when they battled a blaze near the lake. I wish I could have hauled them out but the truck bed was packed to the gills.

Pulled my rear bumper on the left side back about 1.5 inches in a deep washout. That was further on the spot that had that 110km/h speed limit sign. That was the starting point of an ATV trail. I made it a few miles down and through a number of washouts, but then the trail was blocked to 4x4 access. Sucked as it was only 6km to the next lake, so I had to detour 30km around to get to it. Was worth it though as the weather and fishing were great.

Tomorrow get under the truck to inspect the damage, but I think it is pretty minor.

Any suggestions on a better offroad rear bumper, that does not weigh a ton and does not cost a fortune? I've bumper dragged it at least 500 times with this truck now, but that's the first time the rear bumper has sustained any damage. Something low profile and trim but rugged. Not going to change the front bumper, it has not dragged on any of those washouts. The front skid has worked well. Just the back end due to the longer overhang on these Taco's.

Wow, looks like awesome terrain to use your truck to the fullest, or near fullest potential for what its built for. I thought you would post a pic of that rear bumper.

Have you considered installing a dashcam? Would be fun to see some of these washouts you encounter as you approach them. AND, there's a good chance of catching a BigFoot as well.

 

Yeah thought of the dashcam, but just too much tech. For me, it takes away from the experience. Instead of enjoying nature too much time is spent documenting it. Christ, I have at least 10 hunting trips with my father where we never took a single picture with a camera, but the memories are all there.

And lets face it, outside of Tacoma World who wants to see it? How often do we want to sit down while someone shows us pictures from their vacation? Not me anyway.

When you have to drive through 40 washouts in a day it becomes old news and I have no desire to take pics. Plus we all know the pics seldom show what it really looked like. Maybe a better photographer than me can figure out how to take those kinds of pics.

For me the whole experience is about solitude in nature. It’s not about the truck or the washout or the trail. I have no interest in testing the trucks abilities, done that decades ago with other trucks.

No bigfoots yet, but have seen a lot of grizzlies, moose, deer, etc. Bigfoots are clearly the most elusive of them all….
