I've had toyota's since the 70's, none of them ever needed the oil pan drain bolt washer replace. My 2001 tundra that i changed the oil for 19 years never needed a new washer.

Subaru uses an actual crush washer that needs to be replaced at every oil change... as @Speedfreak has noted. However, that is not the case with Toyota.

Been changing oil in cars, trucks, vans, and motorcycles for more than 55 years and I can't remember ever changing a crush washer. In fact, my prior truck didn't even have one....the drain bolt had an integrated seal ring that in 17 years I never had to mess with. I also don't use a torque wrench except on my motorcycles since the pan/engine cases are soft aluminum. You must be over-tightening.

I have been using OEM gaskets for over 4 years (bought in bulk) and torque to 30 ft-lbs. I have never had an issue.

So I ended up getting one of those digital torque meters that you can put on any sort of ratchet that measures from 5-60 ft/lbs.
Yeah, my old torque wrench is WAY out of calibration. On the plus side, I have this now to check against.

You could probably calibrate the old to match the new, using the new as your benchmark. Generally there is an adjustment screw hidden somewhere to calibrate the wrench.

The diffs etc use a crush washer and the oil pan uses the flat fibre washer. At least on my truck which admittedly is not a 3rd gen.

Are you using the wrong washer? Snug is snug you don’t need to even use a torque wrench for the oil pan. Just get it nice and snug with a good sized ratchet.

Just be happy we don’t have the ford drain plugs they use now. They’re plastic along with a plastic pan. Comes off with two fingers with zero effort.

Though I do wish we had their oil filter housings. Right under the hood, doesn’t leak when you open it and it comes off with a socket.

Nah, I'm using the right washer. I just saw a torque spec and my technical side was all "MUST DO IT TO SPEC!" :) And now I found that my torque wrench isn't as reliable as I thought it was.
    Lesson learned, all good now!

I am an environmentalist, I am recycling my oil over and over again. Every time I start my engine it recycles again.:D

I go by the mantra “oil came from ancient oceans, and to the oceans it shall return”. That’s why I dump mine in the storm drain.

The jet turbine MRO i work in uses torque wrenches without any form of setting gauge on them. They are adjusted to value with a hex key on the back while on a Stahlwille torque tester every time a new torque value is needed. I kinda prefer them to those consumer stuff with the adjustment collar but only because they fit in tight spots easily.
