What was your MPG loss going from stock P245/75/16s to LT235/85/16s A/Ts?

I just got a new '22 and I've been able to eek out 22 mpg without much trouble going 70 on the freeway. That's while loaded down with 500 lbs or so.

Of course, I need all-terrain tires, and the 235/85/16 tire size seems to be the best compromise while taking into account off-road ability, clearance, and MPG. The only options here are E-rated though, and I was going to go with the Falken Wildpeak A/T3Ws. I've had those on other vehicles and they're awesome tires, especially for the snow.

What sort of MPG did you see with that switch?

    Oh look, another mod....
That will be heavier tire, and thus...you will lose MPG's. Everyone's loss is different (based on driving conditions), but expect to lose 1 - 2 MPG's.

I am also considering the 235/85/16 as well.

Wildpeaks 245/75/16 do come in extra load 6 ply configuration.
I lost 2 mpg just switching to them. Expect more with LT rated

Is that the biggest tire size without a lift?

    What about the LT265/75 R16?

235's are a really goofy size, its best if you really want to cut around offroading and in snow.

I personally would suggest 265 70 or 265 75 if you want way more choices and a better all around tire.

I've had wider tires on other vehicles and they didn't provide too much advantage, to be honest. If it's for the flotation aspect, I can make up for that by airing down more rather than the 235 --> 265 (15%) width difference. Plus, the skinny tire provides way better on-road manners in the form of handling and precision. It also gives more traction on snowy, icy, or wet roads. The same goes for gravel and dirt.

With the wider tire, I'd have greater weight, more rolling resistance, and less on-road manners. That would hurt MPGs and add more wear and tear to several components. The only advantage I'd get would be in rock crawling and flotation. The flotation I can make up for by airing down more. Rock crawling I have no interest in doing.

But, I'd definitely be sacrificing on the looks department, but oh well. I already have a mismatched topper, so looks are the last thing I'm going for :)

That'd definitely look better, but it would add at least 10 pounds and greater rolling resistance for what is the same height tire, but wider.

But the 265s have standard load options or C/Ds. They will be lighter. Thats the reasoning behind the suggestion.

When you go bigger you're losing ratio for power, and then add weight and it will be worse.

A standard load 265 75 R16 will give you more clearance like the 235's and weights 5# less.

    It's just a suggestion.

Oh yes, that's a good point. I'll think about that. I forgot to mention, I would like to go with E's though -- I clock a lot of miles on gravel, dirt, and some on worse condition roads. 235/85 or 245/65 would be the lightest E's I can get. Though I wonder if the Falken Wildpeak's turnups will mean it's not that necessary. Hard to decide.

I have 235/85/16's Cooper STMaxx's. I seemed to have lost about 1 mpg.

Does the 235 give the truck a lift?

This is stock with 235/85/16's, no air dam and no mud flaps. It sits a little higher than my friends stock '22 which is on the stock SR5 tires.

Looks sweet. Guess this will be my next size tire when I have to replace my stock tires
