broken front strut at shelf that holds the bottom of spring

I was driving my 2015 trd sport hit a bump or pothole and the left strut spring shelf broke off the strut. Truck only has 55k all stock. anyone have this problem or know of any recalls or service bulletins? first picture left broken strut and 2nd looks like the right side about to go.

 

Holy Corrosion Batman! Im thinking thats just a corroded part that failed due to guess what?? CORROSION?!?!?

 

Looks like it failed from rust, I wonder what the frame looks like as it doesn't look like any preventative measures were taken to prevent/slow down rust.
In the rust belt mileage doesn't matter, if you drive on salted roads in the winter you have to take steps such as using fluid film (or another oil/lanolin based undercoating) or at least washing the underside of the truck regularly or it will rust away to nothing very quickly.

Toyota did have an extended warranty on the frame but not suspension components unless they are replaced as part of the frame warranty.

Those should have been changed out years ago. Take care of your truck.

 

Nothing wrong, just tired old struts. Just replace them.

 

How could you possibly look at all that rust and think maybe someone else could be responsible for paying for it. Maintain your vehicle and it won't fail like that

My 2010 got a new frame last November, over one relatively small perforation in the right frame rail. My frame was never treated with anything besides the stuff Toyota used on it under recall in 2017. I'm amazed that after 140K miles in PA, my frame looked as good as it did, and now the new one has been Fluid Filmed...

I live in Michigan, WAYYYY northern Michigan where we use the left over salt on the roads after winter to cure meat..and mine doesnt look ANYwhere near that bad, but then again, woolwax is my friend..Im guessing Atlantis..

 

Looks like he's been driving on beaches for years and never washed the undercarriage at all. Too bad I threw away my stock coilovers just like that in perfect condition.

 

My 2010 doesn't look anywhere near this bad and I live in Minnesota which is part of the rust belt. I guess going through a cash wash that has the underside spray about once a week has some benefits. Also, my frame has been treated with various rust preventatives.

 

I live in CT. and don't drive on beaches or launch boats. I take it through car washes with the under wash spray.
Only have 55k and most of that is summer highway driving. I drive it every day and use it like a truck should be used.
In CT. the state puts something on the road and my town uses sand and salt. I am fortunate not to have to commute in storms and drive after roads are cleared.
Was looking under truck last night and the rear springs and u bolt nuts are also do rusty.
Toyota just sent me another bulletin for recall of the frame good till July 31, of 2023. I was planning on going after this weekends trip to set up an inspection when this happened before the original Jan. ,23 deadline
Only thing I feel luck about was that I was just down the street from my house when this happened. Been watching the frame, but not the struts.

 

Rusted struts will fail early no matter the mileage. Time to get a new set. Springs look pretty rusted too.

 

Frame recall on a 2015? I never got a notice.

 

It's not a recall, it's a customer satisfaction program/extended warranty for trucks in rust belt states only. If you are not the original owner and/or in a rust belt state you likely would not get a letter.

 

I am the original owner but definitely not in the rust belt. That's kinda what I figured.
