Got some other quotes the other day. They all quoted me $4k plus for the chain. All due to being a 20Hr job and all shops labor rate near the same within the city. But other shops suggested not to worry about it until their’s noise from the chain or rattling.

Got my truck back today, $1300 in labor and $800 for the parts for the tune up.
Valve cover gasket, spark plugs, ignition coils, PCV valve and hoses. Fuel injection cleaning and throttle body & intake. Replaced oil and filter.

Happy to have her back in better shape then I left her but definitely going to get work done outside the city next time.

OP, 165K is not enough for a stretched timing chain on a 2.7 unless you (or previous owner(s)) have completely neglected oil changes. Also, unless they are misfiring or poor aftermarket units, coils are NOT part of any tune up. Do you normally do maintenance on time?

    All stock, baby!
Are the codes all gone now? Check engine light is off? Feel like it's running pretty well?

Get another opinion/shop to take a look at it. What jumped out at me is nowhere do you mention they told you what any of the codes are. To me this is a big red flag. It doesn't matter if it's one code or twenty: they should have given you a list, especially for your $50. "It's showing 16 codes" and offer a $2,200 tune-up is not a diagnosis: it's a "throw this against the wall and see if it will stick" crock.

I also don't believe that your timing-chain is gone/loose at 165k on the clock....esp on the 4cyl. My son has 245k on his and it runs like a swiss watch.

UPDATE: :annoyed: Sorry to see that I guess I was too late. Hurried in my reponse before I read the entire thread. Apologies: I hate it when that happens. :(

I would leave it alone now . If you don’t get a check engine light then the timing is doing ok . Change the oil if they didn’t already do it and drive on . That chain can last another 100 k miles on that motor

Aren't timing chains "forever". Op did you find out what the issue was, just bad plugs? Glad you didn't have to shell out 8k. You can get a brand new shortblock from toyota for under 3k
