Trying to decide on a tonneau cover

It was too ridiculous an example to let pass unchallenged.

 

I will say that in my circle of friends I have some who would never buy anything on impulse while others buy nearly everything randomly... Falls back to the idea that different people use truck beds differently which is why there is no "best cover" only best cover for how you use the truck.

Side note, you can usually fit your Lomax cover in the bed beside the impulse buy or in the back seat of the cab so I don't recommend making a tilt up style cover a deal breaking concern unless you will need that feature on a regular basis.

 

I've had this Rough County cover for over a year and it's been great. I like how it sits flush on the bed and easy to remove and reinstall when needed. It doesn't leak, but then again we haven't had much rain in So Cal.

The only downside is that it does use your entire rail so if I want to install bed racks like cover compatible Billie Bars or KB Voodoo, this one needs some cutting to free up rail space. But seeing how much more expensive covers are now than over a year ago, some chopping might be the way to go, rather than a compatible cover.

 

I just put the RetraxOne Mx on this week. Washed the truck today. No water intrusion. I live on the Oregon coast. Lots of rain, high winds and harsh salty air. A soft cover was not going to last. I like this one because it has a nice low profile, a lock and you can lock it in any position along the track. You do lose some bed space to the canister.

 

I'm using a Bakflip G2 bought from a forum member. That Rough Country looks like a less expensive version of the G2.

Just popped a MX4 on my truck. Install wasn't bad and everything seems to fit well. Lots of aluminum shavings as everybody else has said but besides that no real issues.

I decided on the MX4. Shout out to @GotExhaust for the good deal on it and quick shipping. Ordered it friday evening and it arrived yesterday morning.

I like it so far, granted its only been installed for a couple hours now. Wasn't that hard to put on. Only thing was Toyota decided to overtighten the shit out of almost every screw on the rails. One ended up being completely stuck and I stripped it trying everything I had to get it out. Since I'm new to this whole working on vehicles thing I got fuck all for power tools and had to go to my uncles shop and have his guys help me get the screw out. Ended up just drilling the little shit out. But it was a smooth install otherwise. Ill post some pics here in a minute.

Anyone got firsthand opinions on the X4S? The rollup model looks convenient, and I’m curious what the pro/cons are vs. the trifold style.

 

Mine were very tight as well. Ended up using my 1/4in ratchet to get them off without stripping.

 

I was considering it before I found mine on OfferUp. I had actually decided to try and avoid it even before that, even. The issue is it’s obviously much more complex to manufacture and assemble so I’ve heard reports that the pins that hold it in can be damaged and also parts like the end caps on the sides of the individual rails can come loose. Not to mention it’s a more fragile design in general. I just didn’t feel the complexity was worth the potential future headaches.

 

I used a driver bit (screw bit) attached to a ratchet handle. It gave me the torque needed to 'break' the bed rail screws loose.

 

I think my head is going to explode. But I have it narrowed down to the Lomax tri fold or the MX4.
