So I have used every resource. Even ordered the Motivx Tool Oil Filter Wrench, went to use it and the plastic broke. I'm at a lost and ready to cut the oil filter cap off. Why would Toyota make this thing plastic!!?

Any suggestions before I result to cutting? Even about to go buy an Impact Wrench.

Old belt lagged to a bit of wood as a make shift strap wrench?

You did remember to remove the little metal lock clip right?

I have a metal wrench for removal of those damn cartridges and while sometimes I need the 36" breaker I've never not been able to get one off with it.

The cap is just fine, most times. It's techs overtightening it that causes the problems. If tightened to the 25N-m noted on cartridge, it will come free. I use a standard 3/8in ratchet to remove mine.

For yours, have another canister on hand as yours is likely to break. If you have had enough, use a cutting tool to remove the plastic flange just below the metal of the upper section. Once that flange is gone, the cartridge will come off easily.

The clip is not effective until the flutes on the cartridge run into it. I just stops it from unscrewing further from vibes.

Not trying to be a smart ass here, but are you certain you are turning it in the correct direction? Righty-tighty Lefty-loosie can sometimes be a bit confusing when laying on your back. Don't ask me how I know! Best of luck!

Thank you for the feedback! Heading to the parts store now. Gonna try the impact wrench. I have an extra cap on standby. If all fails, I'm cutting it off. Never letting a shop touch my truck again. 18 ft lbs, not 1000 ft lbs lol

I did that once with a brake caliper bolt. Sheared it off turning it the wrong way. Never work on your truck after a 12 hour night shift lol.

Did the dealer put the housing too tight? I broke a ratchet getting the filter housing off after my dealer did a free oil change. Ended up using a box wrench on on the filter tool to remove the housing. My fault for trying a ratchet knowing my dealer did the last oil change.

Hard to believe such a simple job to do an oil change could be so hard. I've done a lot of oil changes over my lifetime and can't ever recall trouble with one.

Whatever method you use, take your time and keep your cool. It's one thing to destroy the cap taking it out, but it's a whole other ballgame if you mess up the other side

It shouldn't be difficult, but when the lazy dealer tech decides an air wrench is the answer to all things that spin, you wind up with a serious issue. It's not super uncommon for the plastic housings on Tacos and Tundras to be cracked, or just tightened to a ridiculous degree by the same tech that'll air wrench your lug nuts on. Pretty sure they can't spell "torque wrench" let alone use one.

Had the same issue on my Tacoma. Luckily it didn’t break but it was super overtorqued and had a hard time removing the drain cap once I finally got the filter housing off. Pretty sure they just stuck an impact in there and went to town putting it on

Mine was over tightened from the factory. I too replaced it with an aluminum cap.

I run into a lot of them over tightened. I get them loose with a 2 foot long 1/2" drive ratchet.

This kind of thread makes me lean towards not using those free oil changes, and just do my own oil changes from the start

Oh there will be some mods all right
Do it. That's what I did with my Tundra and it gave me peace of mind. I told the dealership, " No offense but I hope I don't see you guys ever again unless I'm back here to buy another vehicle."

I already bought all the stuff to do it myself, add a fumoto valve and replace with aluminum filter. Figured when the time comes I can go either way.

This has never let me down, it will crush pieces if you're not careful but works so well. Sometimes the rubber strap wrenches don't work well if the surface is oily, the chain wrench does not care if its oily, dirty, muddy, or greasy its getting it off.
