My twist drill bit set end up just 1/6" short of the diameter of hole I want drilled. I'm thinking of using a step drill bit to drill the rest of the way. The only thing is that the metal is 1/8" thick mild steel and from what little I know, unibits are best for sheet metal.

Will I permanently destroy the unibit?

    Just drill the hole.

1/8” or 11ga is sheet metal, in my opinion.

I’ve drilled a few holes through my fel bucket on the kubota with Harbor Freight step bits. Figured little financial loss if it was too much for them but one bit did the entire job and lived to see another day.

Should be fine. I regularly drill 1/4" steel with a step bit. I've found that it's easier using the skinnier step bits that go from approx 1/4" to 3/8" vs the fatter ones that go from 1/4" to 1"
