2nd gens on 37" tires

Comming from a full overland set up with cap RTT and the rest I feel like I'm packing a tj again. Lol.

 

Im still on my factory rack after around 2 years on 35s, front locker for the last year or so, and a couple runs on 37s at the dunes/in the rocks. Still works great (besides not being able to turn in the rocks, like all steering racks). I think part of it like said a couple pages back, is I run a big cooler, and also still have the sloppy rack bushings which I think takes some shock load forces off of the rack, unlike poly/delrin/aluminum bushings some people use.

I managed to pack everything for a couple days on the Rubicon with my full size spare laying down in the bed, square tool box at the front, firewood, food, coolers, camping stuff, spare driveshaft, and 2 passengers. Some stuff in the cab, but managed to keep the tonneau cover on to hold all the junk in the bed.

 

Just my packing skills. Plus I just got a tent cot. It's big.

 

Oh yeah that thing is huge I come from the mountaineering side of camping, so everything I need to camp fits in a small backpack.

 

I can't believe it's mostly in.

 

I have an idea that I'm going to implement someday, but havent had time yet.

Basically, I'm going to cut a hole in the bed at the front, and build a frame cross member that the tire will sit on vertically. From my measurements, I should be able to get the tire down around 6-8" before it starts interfering with the gas tank or driveshaft at full compression. Then I can continue to run my low RTT rack (12") with a vertical 37" spare. It will also be way more secure than all the people who just strap it vertically. Probably I will have to slide my tent towards the back of the truck to get the spare out, but I figure for how often I would need to, it's just something I'll have to deal with if I get a flat.

If you have a 6' bed, you could probably do this setup and run a 5' tonneau cover, but obviously there would be big gaps beside the spare at the front.

I ran this for years. Allowed me to put my action packers and coolers underneath. Now I just throw my spare in the bed.

I got a cheap used set of 5 K02s.

no flares, cut fenders, was previously on 295s and 315s, cut the cab mounts more but haven’t beat the wheel wells in more yet so rubbing at full lock in reverse.

I think they measure out closer to 36.5”

going to cmc more, and beat it this weekend. Still stock gears.

 

First trail run with 37's did not go so well but then again it did... lol.

What was the ultimate failure of the rack?

 

My spare mounting solution untill next year.

Yeah seems like a bunch of gritty water and mud got in there and it starting puking oil. That's my guess. Haven't pulled it apart yet.

 

is it just me or do others feel after they went to 37's that the tire is too small. they looked big at first but now they look like 33's.
