I'm looking to buy a travel trailer. Mine is a family of 5 so we are looking at bunk houses that are pushing my wt limits.
    5,700lbs dry.

    My truck is a 2021 4X4 Crew SR5.
I also own a Ram 2500 that would be pulling the trailer in most cases. However, there will be situations where the 3/4 ton will be hooked to a horse trailer and have to haul the TT with my Tacoma.
Am I wishful thinking with that much weight behind my Tacoma?

That's pretty close to max tow

That's a whole lot of weight. Maybe if you kept the tacoma empty (minus the driver) and put the majority of necessary camper gear in the 2500 and had a nice WDH on there you would be ok and within the payload and GVWR. Local terrain and how far you'd be hauling plays a role too.

These situations would be typically 2-3 hour trips. Flat terrain.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Almost all experts recommend a dry trailer weight of no more than half of tow vehicle capacity. This allows for loading and a safety factor. Or no more than 85% loaded ready to travel.
I tow my Satellite 17RB, about 3300 lbs dry - probably 35-3600 loaded, with my ‘19 Sport 4x4. This is the max I would go.
I recommend to all new rvers. Set up truck to tow. Add your springs/bags, cooler if needed and brake controller. Then check out RvShare or Outdoorsy.com. Rent something in the range your are looking at to buy. An rv is the worst financial purchase you can make.
Try to get it right the first time to minimize the hurt.

You most likely will exceed GVWR and gross trailer weight in addition to tongue weight. It’s a bad idea to do that for so many reasons. And another thing, it’s damn dangerous to other people on the road you may injure or kill in an accident because of your over loaded truck.

You'd have to keep everything empty, and passengers in the 2500.

Seems like a big pain, less than ideal.

I'm counting the days until I can get a tune and 5.29s towing 3500# TT. I cannot imagine what almost twice that would feel like.

    Way too much.

When trailer shopping, only shop by the gross weight rating. Dry weight is a bullshit number. Why? Your trailer will never weigh that. Dry is an empty trailer. No battery, no propane, no linens, no pots and pans, no chairs, hoses, or anything like that. Guess what, you're probably going to add 1000 pounds to the trailer and still feel like it's "dry," because that weight went to the bare minimum of furnishings.

Buy a camper with a GVWR of under 6k to be safe.

Better yet, buy one with a GVWR of under 4.5k to make it somewhat tolerable on the road.

Don't fall for that dry weight BS.

Nope. Way, way too heavy for the Tacoma to handle. You won’t be able to even match an air cooled VW for acceleration, won’t be able to stop and won’t be able to control trailer sway.

The op hasn’t been back to visit this thread since last Thursday when he made his only 2 posts. 2 posts and gone. He obviously doesn’t care about any answers to his post. Doubt he’ll be back.
