They put in 0W-20 (SYN)- when I always get 5W-30 (Conventional) 2005 Tacoma- Is this a major issue?

    Hey Everybody,

I normally do my own oil (5W-30 Conventional). Decided to treat myself to an oil change, and it looks like they somehow managed to put 0W-20 synthetic in....
    I have a 2005 Tacoma 4.0 liter V6.

From my research, it does not look like one time is going to cause any harm.

    Any input on this?

Thanks for the help (fastest response time of any forum).

    Stay safe and take care.

If you asked for and paid for 5w-30 and got something else, I'd ask them to change it. I'll let someone with more knowledge than I have about oil weight/viscosity respond about the 0W-20.

You should pretty much always stick to the MFR recommendation when picking oil weights. Use what the engine was designed for.

Which engine do you have? If it's a V6, use 5W-30. If it's the I4, then you're good to go.

Regarding synthetic versus conventional, both will provide adequate protection and lubrication, synthetics just better handle heat, contamination, and breakdown and therefore last longer.

Pretty stupid mistake. Take it back and get the oil you asked for.
5w30 synthetic works great in my 05.

I can tell you that I ran 5w-20 in my Tacoma (with the 4.0 V6)
I didn’t experience any negative affects.
I would not recommend using 20w on a regular basis.

FWIW, the 2010+ 4Runner with basically the same engine has been OKed to use 5w-20.
But for some reason, the Tacoma isn’t?

I can’t really see how single vs dual VVTi would make a difference?

0w20 is superior and works fine on the 1gr.

The only time I worked recommend against it is if you’re in a really hot climate.

    Thanks for your input everybody.

I am not going to lose sleep over it now
(But going to check the work receipts with the place tomorrow; just so I really know what is in there).
Regardless, it does not sound like it will do my engine any harm this one time.

    Thanks again folks (definitely appreciated).

    Stay safe and take care.

You might as well check with the shop that did it.
I mentioned it to the shop I went to and he said their computer was showing 5w-20 for my truck.
I mean, the oil cap even says 5w-30. So I don’t really know how they messed that up?

Anyways, the point is, the shop corrected their computer. Who knows how long or how many trucks that went out with the wrong oil. But I’m betting ,I’ve wasn’t the only one, and I nor anyone else obviously had any problem. Because if there was one, the computer would have been fixed by then

No harm, have them put in 5w-30 on their dime.

Sometimes oil weights are chosen for specific engines when they are designed based, at least partly, on things like variable valve timing mechanisms. The dual VVTI could have something to do with it. I could also have to do with using a thinner oil in the updated version of the 1GR to improve fuel economy. Or it could have been due to the availability of the 0W-XX weights when the Tacoma was being designed versus when the 4Runner was designed.

There's lots of possible reasons (and the above are just possible reasons, not saying it's one, the other, or any of them). Bottom line is that it probably won't hurt, and I don't know the specific reason for the difference you've noted, but sticking to the MFR recommendation for that specific vehicle is the best bet, IMO.

Synthetic. Better for winter ranges. Only thing its weaker at is high temps.

0W30 is a better choice, but 0w20 is great, especially for the cold months.

Hey, at least they put some kind of oil in it...that's more than I'd expect from a shop LOL.

This. I forget which place it was but they had a different recommendation in the system than my owner's manual listed, I politely showed that to them and they sent to have it updated plus gave me what I was requesting.

You can use 5w-30 or 5w-20 on a V6 Tacoma. There was a TSB back in 2006 that cleared 5w-20 on all GR engines. 0w20 was not recommended for any GR engine as far as I know. It only warns you to stick with 5w30 if you are having some engine problems.

In that case wouldn't 5w30 synthetic be the best choice?

what does this mean? Did they tell you they put 0w-20 in or is it listed on a receipt? Does it say 0w-20 on the oil change sticker? Maybe they printed the sticker wrong

I say you take 3 quarts of 0w-20, and 3 quarts of 5w-30, and mix them together.
Then call it good at 2.5w25?

    I’m just kidding.
I think the we should happy that the engines in these trucks aren’t too picky on oil.

I feel sorry for the 0w-16 guys. I’ve heard they DO have problems when you run the wrong oil in them.
