The midland mxt 275 has a cigarette lighter plug that comes wired to the head unit. Can I just cut the positive and ground wires where it connects to the cigarette lighter plug then wire it directly to my battery?

it has an inline fuse so as long as I keep the fuse, am I all set?

Do I need to wire up a relay or anything?

Yep, you can do just that. It's what I, and my friends, do.

You don't need to relay as long as you remember to turn it off open( I can't remember if that radio has a proper battery protection) . If you want to turn it off with the ignition then yes, wire a relay in between.
In any case it would be an awesome idea to put an inline fuse close to the battery, in case of any kind of a short or an issue not to burn up your truck

Thanks for the point with having the fuse closer… I may cut the wires after it then but I need to completely decide before half-assing it…
