My 2015 MT shifts like absolute butter when the truck is cold. After around 10 mins of city driving, 3rd gear is an absolute clunker. The shifter feels notchy when shifting up to 3rd. Just doesn’t slide right in there. If I feather the clutch seems to help it a bit but I find myself wincing at it sometimes

when I got the truck, I changed transmission fluid with synthetic Penzoil (shoot, forgot to record the weight) oil.

seems to me once the oil warms up and thins out a bit it gets really clunky (but only 3rd gear).

    Anyone else experience this? Recommendations?

Third gear syncros are known to go in these trucks. Mine has 205K miles. I can shift it into third if I shift just right. Try redline MT 90.

    Redline MT-90 is a must!

You may want to check and replace your shifter end cup and ball seat.

If you haven't already deleted the clutch accumulator valve I recommend doing that as well.

On my 2008, 2nd and 3rd gear were always a little clunky. I think it was around 50k miles, I replaced the stock fluid with Redline MT90. It helped a lot.

What does this do exactly? Did you notice a difference after doing it? Maybe I’ll start with the oil and see if that helps first

Yes I've had it in mine since it had about 30k on it, Im at 71k now.

Some people say I improves the feel of the clutch, I haven't messed with mine yet so IDK.

It gives you direct control over the clutch engagement, no spring loaded B.S. valve making mushy half engagements and laggy throws.

IMHO it VASTLY improved the transmission feel and experience, between deleting the valve, doing the steel FJ Cruiser pedal exchange and getting a Core Shifters short shifter the truck went from a chore of a manual to drive to actually quite sporty and enjoyable.

Do it! You won't regret it, it's $3 and 30 minutes, most of which is bleeding the clutch line.

I also put a SS braided line to replace the MC to hardline flex line, not much noticeable improvement there but some.

I thought it was worth it but it's not necessary like the FJ pedal and accumulator delete.

Sure here's a thread I was pretty active in about it with link's to BillDaCat8's well documented RC62 trans swap thread which also has more details on the FJ pedal swap.

We actually came to the same conclusion and did the swaps around the same time but he posted more about it and did a much better job of documenting it.

I deleted the accumulator and its much better.

I also added Redline MT90 and I'm not so sure about that upgrade. Like the OP stated, my truck shifts better when cold, when hot it gets crunchy and notchy. Not a lot, just more than I'd like.

So what about a thicker oil? We both live is southern BC so cold weather isn't a concern.

I added some Lucas goopy trans oil medic stuff. Seemed like automotive sacrilege to mix it with the Redline MT90 but it worked (for about 6 months). Just throwing my experience out there.

Located in NC, only driven my 6MT taco in summer and these beginning Fall months, been using MT-90. So far I’m a fan, little notchy but not bad by any means.

OP, Welcome to the party!:drunk: The second gens shift like a dump truck.
Here are a few things I've done to remedy the clunky shifting "a little".

    1. Did the accumulator delete (have to bleed the clutch after this, so that was done as well)
    2. Adjusted the clutch pedal free travel
    3. Installed a new oem shifter seat (tried the Marlin Crawler delrin shifter seat, it was way too stiff getting into gear, stick with oem!)
    4. Switched over to Redline MT90 gear oil
    5. Installed a TRD short shifter.

Off topic, but I'm seriously debating on swapping in a 3rd gen 6 speed trans. They are buttery smooth and not ridiculously priced.

I wasn't aware of this FJ pedal exchange. Interesting...

Reading through the accumulator delete thread and appears it’s for 3rd gen.do you know if it’s the same general instructions for 2nd gen?

Same as same. Right off the slave-cylinder. Well worth the trouble.
Initially, I tried to shortcut the bleeding procedure and only bleed the clutch. It works best to bleed RR, RL, FR, FL, then clutch.

Key, do you have part#'s for the cup/seat?
