2022 TRD Pro arrived at dealer this week. Already have an OEM roof rack and 265/75/16 UltraTerrains ready to go on.

 

Still deciding on 285/265!!! Help

 

285 = work

If it were me I'd just stick with 265. However it really depends on what your actual needs are and how you plan on using your truck for the majority of its life.

Mall crawler, weekend warrior, commuter, grocery getter....well 285s aren't really functionally better. You'll have the "look" and just waste gas.

Getting off the beaten path, frequent trips to the trails or offroad park, in the mud a lot.... well 285s and a CMC might be a feasible option.... but honestly theres probably other upgrades you'll be making both before and after to roll those large heavy meats.

If your SR5 is your daily driver, the 285 juice may not be worth the squeeze on several fronts... like I said.... for me..... I'd stick with 265.

I have an access cab SR 4x4 4cyl, so basically I opted for the lightest base model (only the utility package is lower than mine). The 4 cyl has nothing on my first gen V6, it's a complete turd...so I knew loading up 85lbs per corner was gonna be NO BUENO.

I chose a very lightweight 16" wheel (18lbs) and SL 265/75/16 tire (42 lbs) combo that still maintains an aggressive look. I dont need 10 ply, so I stuck with an SL AT tire to save weight. Next time I need tires I'm probably going to go get the new hankook Dynapro AT tires (aggressive 265s that weigh 39lbs). Negative offset caused some scrub radius rubbing on the drivers side front bumper and I'm pretty close to the cab mount on both sides.

My truck is basically a commuter vehicle that has seen the trail and service roads on occasion. When I do make it off the beaten path it feels like the stock 245s could probably handle whatever I'm doing, so I really dont personally NEED large tires. They look better and are nice to have in the snow. I purchased my wheel tire combo for looks, but mainly for weight to maintain stock like driving mannerisms. I'm steadily getting 20-22 mpg for over 2 years, a bit better in the summer.

I kept my setup light so my truck still felt spry and responsive. I know 285s on a 4cyl would probably need a regear in order to maintain daily driver mannerisms, especially in areas where there are hills --- not sure how the v6 would handle the bigger tires, but it would probably be better than the 4cyl turd. If you have the i4, I'd imagine you'll be gear hunting pretty bad on 285s.

My wheels have -25mm offset so I'm sure I'm putting extra stress on my hub bearings, but at 40k miles I haven't had any problems. Again, I'm not offroad all that much and when I am it's not hardcore, so other than normal wear and tear I'm not breaking stuff.

The way I see it is if this is a DD then 285s are out..... I bought this truck for the long haul and I'm no stranger to the tacoma reliability over 10-15-20 years, that was the reason for me buying another taco, it just ran.. and gave me zero issues. I'd set my rig up to be good for both your weekend trips and daily driving. It's up to you.. choose wisely

 

did you do a cab mount chop? any rubbing? looks really good.

@PuyallupJon Yes, sir! I may have been able to fit them by manipulating alignment specs to fit but opted for the CMC because I'm lazy.

 

I went 275-70-17 but obviously had to change the wheel size. I considered 285s but didn't want to deal with rubbing or CMC and other trimming and felt like 265s would look too small. I'm loving the 275-70-17, feels like the perfect size for a 2/1 lift.

 

Picked her up brand new February 2021. Loved every second of it so far.

Might have changed my mind with this one! Any other modifications needed beside a 2/1" lift to fit the 275s? I would use the same SEMA wheels as well.

Thanks. I'm loving this set up and would do it again with no hesitation. No other modifications needed. The 275s definitely feel heavier when you're behind the wheel, but nothing major. I'm still averaging 17 in town and 19-20 on the highway.

 

Same size tires, my Milage is the opposite, 18-19 city 16-17 highway. But I live in the Chicagoland suburban area where the average highway speed is around 80.

New TRD Pro just back from the detailer after paint correction and Modesta BC-04 coating. I had him remove the exterior emblems as well. The 265/75/16 UltraTerrains are on, still need to install roof rack and get the windows tinted.
