    Hi folks. This is for a ‘97 3.4L 4x4 M/T, 275K.

I’ve been having a few issues that I think may be interrelated, looking for diagnostic help. I have been hearing a solid clunk and feeling a slow engage when putting into reverse for about six months. Three months ago, the pedal dropped to the floor and I had to replace the master cylinder. Last week (this is what I need most immediate help with), I had a hard time moving in first. I could put the shifter into first, but I tried to let off the clutch and the truck wouldn’t budge, even though it tried. Almost like I had a strong parking brake on (I did not). I put more pressure on and I think I burnt the clutch a bit because I smelled something like burnt brakes. I was able to go into reverse, so I wiggled backwards, and then threw it into first and it caught. Once moving, driving was smooth again. I suspect I’m due for a clutch replacement, but I haven’t had clutch slippage at higher speeds. I also have been meaning to check the fluid but couldn’t get the top fill plug off (need an extension). Is it time for a new clutch?

When I put the engine under load burning my clutch, my temp gauge also dropped to cold. No idea what that’s about, advice appreciated.

    thanks

Definitely sounds like it's time for a new clutch, release bearing & pilot bushing. While you're in there, make sure you check the condition of the flywheel (it will likely need to be faced), and verify that the rear main seal isn't leaking.

    OP,
I just finished R&Ring the clutch assembly & rear main seal on my '97 V6 Taco. This was on top of having the R150F tranny rebuilt. On disassembly, the original clutch disc/plate/flywheel were still doing fine. But the thowout bearing/pilot bearing/rear main seal did not have a lot of life left in them. When you R&R your clutch assembly, it would be a smart move to replace the rear main seal & pilot bearing while you have the tranny out. The parts are relatively inexpensive when you consider what it takes to get access to them again. I went back with an AISIN aftermarket clutch kit with a LUK flywheel & an OEM rear main seal. Check Rockauto & Amazon for the best price on the AISIN clutch kit. If you want to save some money, the EXEDY clutch kit has also been verified to be a very good choice. Good luck!
