    Most trucks are capable of serving briefly as boats. I can attest to this as I used to go down the the boat launch and watch the show! Guys in their brand new, fully loaded trucks, backing a boat in a little too far. Bed hits the water, floats, they panic, release the brakes and hit the gas for the 2 rear wheels which are no longer touching the ramp. And those are the ones that were able to actually back it up straight enough to get it into the water. It's a free show every weekend!

    Pretty soon, Jared will be the first repeat CMR of a Dragon flight. No telling what sort of training or certifications he’s earned or is working on..

    After all, at one point every fully qualified astronaut had to have their first mission.

    Didn’t NASA pull its astronauts from a pool of aviation volunteers? That changed as we transitioned to scientific missions but even for the mission commanders?

    1000s of hours of jet flight has been a prerequisite to command (be in charge and fly the spacecraft) since the beginning. That kind of experience has typically been obtained through the military.

    As spacecraft evolved, no astronaut wanted to give up the ‘pilot’ title so that’s where you get some confusing ranks and position designations up to the shuttle era.

    The Shuttle’s human capacity opened the door for non-spacecraft piloting related astronaut rank and designations.

    On the topic of astronaut roles in the shuttle era: "Come Fly With Us". Among other things, it describes the differentiation between flight crew (cmdr & plt), the mission specialists & payload specialists. Plus the reservations/skepticism the profesional astronauts initially had towards the role of the payload specialists in particular.
