Axle seal broke and spewed out diff fluid. What I am wondering is if I can drive another 30 miles with it like that or if it should be out of commission until repair is made.

it wasn’t a slow leak. It left a decent puddle.

You’ll wreck it if you drive it. As far as I know the front diff is always turning even in 2WD. At least the spider gears are.

30 mi is kinda a long ways without lube especially the amount you described. But then again the gears arent under load/being driven other than the hubs spinning. If i were to err on the side of safety i would not drive it.

i really wish our trucks had off/auto locking hubs.

If it was a slow leak I'd say it's fine, drove mine with a slow CV axle seal leak for weeks until I finally got a new one seated correctly. Just topped it off a couple times

But a big leak is different

You can drive it as is and hope it doesn't run out of lube and grenade.
You can top it off every couple of days, but letting it leak all over the road is an AHole move for motorcyclists.
Err towards what's the worst that can happen, you burn up the front axle ASSY and that's getting expensive.

Let it sit until I could fix it and install the ECGS bushing. Seems to be running fine now with no leaks. CV sits a lot more snug in the bushing!!
