I'm getting a slight leak from my oil filter after changing my oil. If I unscrew the filter, inspect and reseat it, will I loose any substantial amount of oil?

Why not give it a 1/8 more turn?

Just curious, do you recall installing a new drain plug gasket with the oil filter when you changed it last?
And I apologize for not answering your question, I wouldn’t know as I have a 2nd Gen. Best of luck.

Just what is in and above the filter housing.

@soggyBottom I am speculating since I have not done it, but you may loose most of the oil that is inside the oil filter housing and possibly not loose a large amount of oil upon removal of the filter. I am also leaning towards a missing rubber gasket ... perhaps. IMO, you can only go so tight on these oil filter housing nowadays.

Yeah I installed both gaskets. I probably made a mistake somewhere. I'll report back when a pull the filter.

This is the 2nd time I've done an oil change on this truck. First time went perfectly.

As mentioned earlier, be careful that you don't crack the housing.

This is likely the culprit, especially if it is at the drain port on the filter housing.

My bet is you forgot to change out one of the gaskets. I had the same issue and it was because I left on the old gasket by mistake, they're not reusable and they'll leak slightly if you don't change them.

If you get the oil filter drail tool from amazon, you can drain it into something and reuse the oil no prob. Makes future changes that much easier too.

I did 1/4 turn and it's wayyyyyy worse. It's leaking from the filter seal area.

OK, probably a pinched gasket or you cracked the housing. Disassemble at this point to determine cause

That's why I used the word "forgot", as in he may have thought he did but forgot that he actually didn't hence the leak. I'm sure he hadn't already thought to try tightening it more tho! Good call!

You will only lose what oil is in the filter housing -- providing the engine is off when you remove the filter housing. ;);)

If you do try it with the engine running set up a few cameras first.

It looks like the oring was pinched. I saw a small gap in it when I was unscrewing it. Once it was completely off, it snapped back into position.

^Is that a Toyota filter purchased through a dealer? The O-ring appears to have a pronounced mold line on the sealing surface, more prominent than the Toyota filter O-rings in my garage. Is the red stuff a lubricant you added?

Was it cross threaded? The orange (is that damage?) is not where the threading starts...
