Just dump the oil and start fresh with new filter and 6/7 quarts of oil. It blows but its betting than fubaring your yota.

    Yeah.
That o-ring is in the wrong groove. It goes in the groove above it.

I've seen the same type of orange orings on Fram and Purolator filters, they tend to lose the orange paint.

sure looks like it, something is not right with the threads where that orange stuff is above the o ring.
think he needs to buy new plastic cap and just slightly put oil on the threads, not orange gasket sealer.

The red is a coating they put on mobile one filters. I'm not sure what happened. I must have had it in the wrong groove.. I spent another $10 on a filter to get a new gasket just to be on the safe side.

Anyway, it's fine now. Thanks for the help.

Not to be a dick, but this isn't a conventional can type spin on filter like the 1GR.

Seating the canister "harder" into the engine isn't going to squish that O ring and make it seal "better". It's just going to make the canister harder to remove the next time... or maybe crack the plastic cannister if one were to hulk it.

    ;)

Edit: Here's a good explanation, with a picture and everything! Yeah, yeah, it's from a Tundra but the principle is the same. I will concede that if the housing were to back off FAR ENOUGH, the big O-ring would no longer be seated in the bore.. but there are metal springy tabs to help prevent that.

No, it's in the right groove in OP's pic. It just got pinched in the threads but snapped back in there after OP removed the cannister.

It's also a good idea to lube that o-ring with a little fresh oil to help prevent it from sticking/bunching up and you thread in the canister.

FWIW, from the pic, it looks like the thread housing has little chip marks on them. As far as the OEM gasket, they are just plain black. Stick with OEM all the time, there is really not that much difference in price compared to other brands.

you won't lose much oil just removing the filter. i use OEM, Wix, or NAPA Premium filters. the wix and napa premium are both made by Mann+Hummel so i think they are the same filter.
