Poor visibillity in rain

+1 for Rain-X washer fluid. My visibility in the rain is flawless and I don't even use wipers at 60+.

OEM blades are decent and refillable for cheap, FYI!

Edit - to add I've noticed this windshield likes to have a fog on it every now and again. Not sure what that's about, but some elbow grease and some glass cleaner clears it up. Usually can only see the fog at night.

 

I had my truck detailed a few months ago, the guy used a clay bar on my front windshield (he showed me the clay bar, and it was full of dirt, minerals, tar, ect), then he cleaned it with the usual stuff, then treated it with Rain-X. A few weeks later it rained so hard you couldn't see 10 ft in front of you, but my wipers wiped everything off the front windshield.

My recommendation: Run a clay bar over the wind shield to get ALL dirt/debris.

 

Now that the "clean your windshield/use your wipers" has run its course, lets move on to the next course of action: throw on those hazards



Seriously though, its not a Tacoma specific problem, or a "new glass these days sucks" sort of issue. Go to the root of the problem; if water is splotching up, its because that water is finding something to cling to. On a painted vehicle, thats often some sort of debris (that you often can't see), and a clay bar/wax/polish does the trick. Treat glass the same way - clean it. After that, move on to your wipers, and ensure they're making contact across the entire wiper; address accordingly.

 

I've been looking at Youtube off and on since this thread started; concerning the absolute cleaning of windshields. Maybe it was mentioned upthread, about cleaning your windshield with steel wool? I saw a video detailing that process with 0000 Steel wool. I "may" try that but want someone else to go first

Not a bad idea. If we look at the geologic "Moh's hardness" scale, the higher number scratching the lower, steel ranks as a 5.5. A standard silica float glass ranks as a 7. Hence, steel wool and razor blades are glass safe. Glass coatings and/or window tint is not safe to steel, but glass is.

Edit, FYI, quartz sand, like the kind used in sandpaper, is a 7.5. 7 and 7.5 tend to do mutual damage without one significantly scratching the other, but it's still not something I'd want to try.

 

Same and never had an issue, never waxed etc.. The water beads off nicely. I hardly ever use the wipers unless it's really pouring. But this is on a 2nd Gen. Maybe they changed the angle of the dangle for the 3rd Gens?

 

There is another thread about this here somewhere but there was an older gentleman on there saying to use a product called Bon Amie from the grocery store near the dish soaps. Apparently this stuff isn't abrasive and has the exact pH level to remove the film and road grime from windows. I have tried it with great results. Maybe it could help. Comes in a powder. You wet the window down ans sprinkle the stuff on and let it sit for like 10 minutes. Rinse it and dry it with newspaper print or a microfiber absorant towel. Don't wipe but dab.

But in reality, I got almost 20K miles out of the original pair of OEM wipers so I figured I’d try something different to compare.

 

The amount of ridiculous shit that people find to complain about here amazes me. A quick google search for most of these "issues" is all the guidance that someone so helpless needs. Not to mention, it's incredibly more efficient than posting & waiting for replies.

 

Yeah, the next complaint thread will be: My windows roll down to slow. Does anyone know how to fix this? Maybe I should put a flux capacitor on the motor to speed it up to 88MPH. I'd like to do this without using plutonium though.

 

I just changed my blades with Michelins and after a month they are making an awful racket. I cleaned the windshield and blades. Very Disappointed.

Had the same issue with those and every silicone blade I tried. I went on Amazon and bought a 16 dollar pair of Aslam rubber blades. My wiper problems are gone.

 

I stopped using rain x applied to the windshield because it makes my wipers chatter. However, i get decent beading without the chatter from the premix rain x wiper fluid, not the concentrate.(never tried it) I like the purple made for colder climates.

 

I thought it was just me. I have tried several different brands of wipers and in the end I always end up unhappy with them and go back to the dealership to get a new set.

As for spots forming on the windshield and the wipers not getting rid of it, there is a lot of stuff on the road that gets kicked up and lands on your vehicle. All those pits on the windshield prove the point. You probably had someone in front of you kick up something oily and it hit the windshield. Between finding a set of wiper blades your truck likes, making sure you have cleaned/removed any oily substances from the glass and wiper, and finally applying either rainx or a ceramic coating to the windshield itself you should have your problem solved.
